Sorry, folks, Warner Bros. has officially canceled the \u201cSummer of Superman,\u201d and the big question remains: if the movie was supposedly profitable, why kill the campaign?<\/p>\n

Multiple reports \u2014 including my insiders, Variety, and later Forbes \u2014 pegged the budget for Superman around $350 million. <\/p>\n

Now, an opinion piece at Forbes suddenly claims the opposite, insisting the movie made money. At this point, Forbes feels like ComicBookMovie, where anyone can publish whatever they \u201cthink.\u201d<\/p>\n

Studios don\u2019t release movies in theaters to lose money<\/p>\n

Even if Superman pulled in some ancillary revenue, studios don\u2019t make blockbusters just to break even outside theaters. <\/p>\n

The theatrical run is the signal of audience interest. And clearly, audiences weren\u2019t into it. <\/p>\n

Dwayne Johnson tried the same spin with Black Adam. Oh, the irony! How\u2019d that work out?<\/p>\n

If Superman was truly the big win Gunn\u2019s supporters claim, then Warner Bros. would\u2019ve locked in another \u201cSummer of Superman\u201d for 2027 without hesitation.<\/p>\n

They didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

WB chooses Minecraft over Superman<\/p>\n

Instead, the same studio scheduled the Minecraft sequel only two weeks after Gunn\u2019s Man of Tomorrow<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Minecraft sequel will take the premium screens, the IMAX slots, the Dolby rooms \u2014 everything you\u2019d give to a top-tier blockbuster. And that\u2019s before factoring in the rest of the 2027 summer competition. <\/p>\n

Superman wasn\u2019t profitable<\/p>\n

When a studio positions one of its own franchises directly against another, it\u2019s because one is performing and one isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

The message is obvious: Superman wasn\u2019t profitable. Minecraft was \u2014 and WB wants to ride that summer wave!<\/p>\n

The \u201cSummer of Superman\u201d is officially over.<\/p>\n
