Yes folks, there was indeed a time when people considered Matt Damon\u2014a now-enduring and endearing actor of his generation\u2014a lightweight. While calling him a \u201cStreisand\u201d (whatever that even meant) may have been a little far, many of us in the late nineties and early 2000s saw him as a pretty boy, and few thought he\u2019d stand the test of time as a superstar. There\u2019s a fine line between actors who endure\u2014like Leonardo DiCaprio or Tom Cruise\u2014and stars who fizzle out. At the time, no one knew which side of the coin Damon would land on.<\/p>\n

But the release of\u00a0The Bourne Identity<\/a>\u00a0changed everything. Not only did it give him an iconic role, it redefined him in a quality blockbuster that permanently established him as one of the greats. Despite its eventual classic status, the movie endured a notoriously troubled production, plagued by reshoots, poor test screenings, and an opening weekend that had many thinking it would flop. Here\u2019s WTF Happened to\u00a0The Bourne Identity.<\/p>\n

Matt Damon\u2019s Pre-Bourne Struggles<\/p>\n

A Breakout\u2026 Followed by a Cold Streak<\/p>\n

Flash back to 1997\u2014an amazing year for Matt Damon. While most remember it as the year of\u00a0Good Will Hunting, that was actually the less prestigious of two major projects he had lined up. His supporting role in\u00a0Courage Under Fire\u00a0put him on the Hollywood fast track, after being mostly known as the anti-Semitic prep who bullied Brendan Fraser in\u00a0School Ties. Damon famously underwent a starvation diet to lose sixty pounds, impressing co-star Denzel Washington so much that Washington felt he needed to \u201cup his game\u201d not to be overshadowed.<\/p>\n

That heat got Damon cast in\u00a0The Rainmaker, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Many expected it to be his\u00a0A Time to Killmoment\u2014but the film underperformed. Still, Damon\u2019s momentum helped Miramax greenlight\u00a0Good Will Hunting, which he co-wrote with Ben Affleck. Two weeks after\u00a0The Rainmaker\u00a0came out,\u00a0Good Will Hunting\u00a0hit theaters, grossed over $200M on a $10M budget, and earned Damon and Affleck the Best Original Screenplay Oscar.<\/p>\n

Then Came the Setbacks<\/p>\n

Despite his status as Hollywood\u2019s hottest new star, Damon\u2019s follow-up films (aside from two exceptions) bombed:<\/p>\n

Rounders\u00a0(1998) came and went quietly, despite later becoming a cult classic (so much so that it might get a sequel<\/a>)<\/p>\n

The Legend of Bagger Vance\u00a0was Oscar bait that became a punchline.<\/p>\n

Titan A.E.\u00a0flopped.<\/p>\n

All the Pretty Horses\u00a0was butchered in post and remains one of the great \u201clost films.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many actors never recover from this kind of streak.<\/p>\n

Two Important Exceptions<\/p>\n

Saving Private Ryan\u00a0gave him a prestige boost (even though he appears the least among the major cast).
The Talented Mr. Ripley, in which he played a gay psychopath, was a hit but controversial at the time\u2014yes, playing a gay character in 1999\u00a0was\u00a0a stigma. The \u201cStreisand\u201d quote in\u00a040-Year-Old Virgin\u00a0mocked exactly that outdated attitude. Still, studios were nervous enough about Damon\u2019s image that in\u00a0Ocean\u2019s Eleven, despite being thirty, he was still cast as \u201cthe kid.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Unlikely Casting of Jason Bourne<\/p>\n

A Ludlum Adaptation No One Thought Would Work<\/p>\n

Robert Ludlum\u2019s\u00a0The Bourne Identity\u00a0was long considered unfilmable. Sam Peckinpah tried with\u00a0The Osterman Weekend. Burt Reynolds once considered starring. A miniseries with Richard Chamberlain happened, but never spawned more.<\/p>\n

Then Doug Liman\u2014fresh off\u00a0Swingers\u00a0and\u00a0Go<\/a>\u2014pushed to adapt it. Universal saw potential in giving an indie filmmaker a shot at a spy franchise.<\/p>\n

The key stroke of genius: hiring Tony Gilroy (yes,\u00a0Andor\u2019s Tony Gilroy) to rewrite the story from the ground up. He kept only the premise\u2014amnesiac assassin. The Carlos the Jackal subplot was scrapped.<\/p>\n

Damon Was NOT the First Choice<\/p>\n

Universal considered more physically imposing actors:<\/p>\n

Russell Crowe<\/p>\n

Brad Pitt (who chose\u00a0Spy Game\u00a0instead)<\/p>\n

Knowing audiences would doubt him, Damon trained intensely in weapons and martial arts for three months. His visceral fight with Castel became\u00a0the\u00a0moment he was officially taken seriously as a movie star.<\/p>\n

A Production Filled With Chaos<\/p>\n

Studio vs. Doug Liman: Two Different Movies<\/p>\n

The studio wanted a Tony Scott-style slick action movie. Liman wanted a gritty 70s paranoia thriller.<\/p>\n

Major conflicts included:<\/p>\n

Studio rewrites to \u201camp up the action\u201d (Damon threatened to quit).<\/p>\n

Liman insisting on shooting in Paris without iconic landmarks.<\/p>\n

Disagreements over the raw, handheld action aesthetic.<\/p>\n

The famous farmhouse showdown almost getting cut until producer Frank Marshall intervened.<\/p>\n

Endless Reshoots & Post-9\/11 Changes<\/p>\n

Reshoots were so extensive that the release moved from Christmas 2001 to summer 2002\u2014normally a bad sign. Post-9\/11 sensibilities forced them to remove exploding buildings. The original score by Carter Burwell was rejected in favor of John Powell\u2019s now-classic soundtrack.<\/p>\n

Things went so badly that Liman wasn\u2019t invited back for the sequel\u2014enter Paul Greengrass.<\/p>\n

A Slow Start\u2026 Then the Sleeper Hit of 2002<\/p>\n

Universal braced for failure. Reviews surprised them by being very positive. The film opened with:<\/p>\n

$27 million<\/p>\n

Beaten by\u00a0Scooby-Doo<\/p>\n

Behind Affleck\u2019s\u00a0The Sum of All Fears<\/p>\n

But then word of mouth kicked in. While competing films plummeted week to week,\u00a0The Bourne Identity\u00a0kept climbing. It ended at\u00a0$121 million domestic\u2014enough to greenlight a sequel immediately.<\/p>\n

And then came the DVD era.<\/p>\n

The DVD Phenomenon<\/p>\n

The Bourne Identity\u00a0became a massive home video hit\u201440-Year-Old Virgin\u00a0even jokes about how every tech shop used it as a demo disc. The apartment fight and the Paul Oakenfold-backed car chase became instant classics.<\/p>\n

The Legacy of Bourne<\/p>\n

The Most Influential Spy Since Bond<\/p>\n

The Bourne films changed action cinema. \u201cBourne-style\u201d thrillers dominated the 2000s. Even Damon\u2019s buddy Ben Affleck starred in his own amnesiac-spy movie (Paycheck).<\/p>\n

Most importantly, Bourne transformed Matt Damon\u2019s image:<\/p>\n

From \u201cpretty boy\u201d to legit action star<\/p>\n

From youthful actor to mature leading man<\/p>\n
