By the 2010s, the cool 20-somethings you saw on television were millennials, catering to an audience that had just left college and come of spending age: The gang on New\u202fGirl sang along to Wicked, Broad City\u2019s Abbi and Ilana marveled at the Gowanus Whole Foods, Hannah and the Girls girls moved to Greenpoint. Now, viewers in their 20s are mostly zoomers. This summer, television comedy is doing its best to catch up with them, releasing a series of shows aiming at the zillennial cusp and trying to depict what it\u2019s like to be a young (or, in the case of Too Much, youngish) person right now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmdg9lljm001j0ifd94t2tq4u@published\" data-word-count=\"117\">Setting: \u201cCollege\u201d \ud83c\udf7a<br \/>What it\u2019s like: American Pie, Van Wilder, Greek<br \/>Generation depicted: Characters are freely assigned millennial (loving Britney Spears, referencing Glee) and Gen-Z traits (loving Charli XCX, using the word rizz).<br \/>Character age: 18 to 22<br \/>Actor age: Wally Baram, 28<br \/>Creator age: Benito Skinner, 31<br \/>Is it funny? Well, sometimes: Think sophomoric comedy crossed with sincere coming-out story.<br \/>\u201cIt\u201d girl cameo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/charli-xcx-interview-brat-summer-fall-kamala-harris.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Charli XCX<\/a>, resentful that she has to play a gig at a college. When referred to by first name, often mistaken for Charlie Puth. Again, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/overcompensating-review-benito-skinner-amazon-prime.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">what year is it?<\/a><br \/>Is Owen Thiele in it? Yes, as a supporting character. He\u2019s an out gay guy who works at a college shop and gives Benny advice and Gatorade.<br \/>Is there a fire-related mishap? No.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmdg9r7u700203b78sdgxw64v@published\" data-word-count=\"144\">Setting: NYC (but obviously filmed in Toronto) \ud83d\ude95<br \/>What it\u2019s like: It\u2019s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, New Girl, Girls<br \/>Generation depicted: A very online and niche-reference-prone version of Gen-Zers terrified of falling off their parents\u2019 medical-insurance plans and attempting to enter their \u201croast-chicken era\u201d of adulthood.<br \/>Character age: Early 20s<br \/>Actor age: Lucy Freyer, 29; Malik Elassal, 29<br \/>Creator age: Ben Kronengold, 28; Rebecca Shaw, 29<br \/>Is it funny? Very! There are jokes! They are goofy and rapid-fire. Not all of them hit, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/adults-needs-more-episodes.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">enough of them do<\/a>.<br \/>\u201cIt\u201d girl cameo: Julia Fox, invited to a dinner party by a character who does not realize she is famous. \u201cWe volunteer together for Meals on Wheels. She\u2019s meals, I\u2019m wheels!\u201d<br \/>Is Owen Thiele in it? Yes, as a main character named Anton. He\u2019s desperate to seem cool but usually falls short.<br \/>Is there a fire-related mishap? In a way. A chicken is dramatically undercooked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.vulture.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmdg9mjoa001h3b78nss8qs61@published\" data-word-count=\"166\">Setting: London \ud83c\uddec\ud83c\udde7<br \/>What it\u2019s like: Bridget Jones, period dramas, Emily in Paris, also Girls<br \/>Generation depicted: Millennials who grew up on Bridget Jones\u2019s Diary and What a Girl Wants, weathered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/lena-dunham-easter-eggs-too-much.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a too-long entanglement in their 20s<\/a> with a boyfriend who thought he should write for Pitchfork, and lurk on TikTok while too afraid to actually post.<br \/>Character age: 35 with flashbacks to 29<br \/>Actor age: Will Sharpe, 38; Megan Stalter, 34<br \/>Creator age: Lena Dunham, 39<br \/>Is it funny? Yes, but in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/too-much-review-lena-dunham-netflix.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cringe-comedy way<\/a>. Stalter\u2019s character finds herself routinely subjected to mishaps, often due to misunderstanding British culture. Also, the British themselves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/will-sharpe-too-much-lena-dunham-megan-stalter-finale-interview.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are generally strange and amusing<\/a>.<br \/>\u201cIt\u201d girl cameo: Rita Ora, recruited to appear in an ad Stalter\u2019s character is working on. She wears a Santa outfit and reveals that she does possess solid comedic timing.<br \/>Is Owen Thiele in it? Yes, in a brief cameo as himself, recording a front-facing camera video reacting to something that has gone viral.<br \/>Is there a fire-related mishap?
