{"id":320541,"date":"2025-12-02T13:00:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T13:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/320541\/"},"modified":"2025-12-02T13:00:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T13:00:08","slug":"bear-under-altadena-home-showing-no-signs-of-leaving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/320541\/","title":{"rendered":"Bear under Altadena home showing no signs of leaving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-6522e0\" class=\"body-graf\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/news\/local\/altadena-bear-crawlspace\/3809935\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bear<\/a> that moved into a home\u2019s crawlspace more than a week ago in Altadena is not budging: despite numerous attempts by the homeowners to keep him out, the animal is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/news\/local\/altadena-bear-home-crawlspace\/3810456\/?_osource=pa_npd_loc_nat_nbcn_gennbcnews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">staying put<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5876aa\" class=\"body-graf\">Ken Johnson, the homeowner, said Monday that the bear has been growling and hissing, terrifying him and his cat. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8891c4\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI feel nervous all the time,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cI\u2019m always looking over my shoulder to see if he\u2019s coming out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-026d59\" class=\"body-graf\">Johnson first told NBC Los Angeles last week that the bear had history of frequenting his house, but now, the animal seems to have found a place to call home despite pipes, air ducts and dirt in the narrow crawlspace at the home on North Altadena Drive. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-941bcf\" class=\"body-graf\">Johnson said even when the bear isn\u2019t inside the house, it\u2019s hard not to notice its presence. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-991048\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe cat was sniffing around the vent that comes up in the kitchen because he\u2019s right underneath there,\u201d the human resident said. \u201cLast night, (I heard) all this banging around underneath the ground. The next thing he knows, he\u2019s on the camera again, coming out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-817680\" class=\"body-graf\">Johnson said the unwanted roommate destroyed his trash can as well.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a39f5c\" class=\"body-graf\">The bear, which is ear-tagged, is known to officials with the Department of California Fish and Wildlife is a male, weight up to 550 pounds.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0a9792\" class=\"body-graf\">Although wildlife experts recommend having a barrier around the house to keep bears and other animals out, Johnson said the trick didn\u2019t work for him.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-293b06\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThis brick lining is here, and it weighs like 30 pounds,\u201d Johnson explained, showing the torn-down fence. \u201cThis thing is digging into my house, destroying property and living rent free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e0c33d\" class=\"body-graf\">The Department of California Fish and Wildlife said those who live in the foothill areas should remove anything attractive to bears, such as pet food and remnants of food on a grill. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1b8bca\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIf you have fruit trees around your home, removing any fruit that has fallen is a good idea,\u201d said Cort Klopping, a spokesperson for the state agency. \u201cBird feeders, believe it or not, are attractants to bears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-792049\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">People who spot a bear are urged to file a <a href=\"https:\/\/wildlife.ca.gov\/HWC#600345494-wildlife-incident-reporting\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wildlife incident report on the department\u2019s website<\/a> while covering up access to the home when the bear is not there.
