Algoma Steel<\/a> said Monday that it plans to lay off about 1,000 workers due to impacts from tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/a><\/p>\n

In an emailed response to Global News, the Ontario-based company said the layoffs will come as a result of a Sault Ste. Marie plant closure being made to adapt to the \u201cfundamentally altered\u201d landscape.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlgoma Steel has been significantly impacted by the unprecedented tariffs imposed by the United States. These tariffs have fundamentally altered the competitive landscape and sharply limited our ability to access the U.S. market,\u201d Algoma Steel said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs part of the closure of its blast furnace and coke making operations, Algoma has made the difficult decision to issue approximately 1,000 layoff notices today, effective in 16 weeks on March 23, 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company goes on to say how the decision to close the plant and lay off workers is \u201cnecessary\u201d given what it describes as \u201cextraordinary and external market forces.\u201d<\/p>\n

Federal Industry Minister Melanie Joly spoke in the House of Commons Monday afternoon after the news of Algoma\u2019s layoffs was announced.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously our thoughts are with the workers affected by the unjustified and unjustifiable tariffs imposed by the White House, and we will continue to work with them as Algoma Steel is going through a difficult situation, to say the least,\u201d said Joly.<\/p>\n

We absolutely have every confidence in the Algoma workers, as they\u2019re going through this hardship, and we will make sure that we support them as they\u2019re developing new products and also accessing new markets \u2014 we\u2019ll fight for these jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the comments from Joly, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said, \u201cmore promises and more Liberal thoughts will not put food on the table of those out-of-work steelworkers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Monday\u2019s announcement from Algoma Steel comes less than a month after the company said it had completed a $500 million financing transaction<\/a> with the federal and provincial governments.<\/p>\n

In September, it was announced Algoma Steel was poised to receive a total of half a billion dollars in tariff relief funding<\/a> from both the federal and provincial governments as part of the Large Enterprise Tariff Loan program.<\/p>\n

The loans were set up to help the steel company limit disruptions to its workforce and pivot its business model to be less reliant on the United States for its business.<\/p>\n
