The contenders include authors from nine countries on four continents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">It\u2019s Desai\u2019s first novel since \u201cThe Inheritance of Loss,\u201d which won the Booker in 2006.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Two previous finalists are up for the prize again: U.K. writer Andrew Miller, for \u201cThe Land in Winter,\u201d and Canadian-born writer David Szalay for \u201cFlesh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Tash Aw, who has been a semifinalist twice before, will be the first Malaysian winner if he takes the prize for \u201cThe South.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Five of the contenders are from Britain: Miller, Szalay, Natasha Brown (\u201cUniversality\u201d), Jonathan Buckley (\u201cOne Boat\u201d) and Benjamin Wood (\u201cSeascraper\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Books by U.S. writers in the running include Susan Choi\u2019s \u201cFlashlight,\u201d Katie Kitamura\u2019s \u201cAudition\u201d and Ben Markovits\u2019 \u201cThe Rest of Our Lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Also on the list are \u201cMisinterpretation\u201d by Albanian-American Ledia Xhoga, \u201cLove Forms\u201d by Trinidad\u2019s Claire Adam, and \u201cEndling,\u201d a debut novel by Canadian-Ukrainian opera librettist Maria Reva.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe 13 longlisted novels bring the reader to Hungary, Albania, the north of England, Malaysia, Ukraine, Korea, London, New York, Trinidad and Greece, India and the West Country,\u201d said Irish novelist Roddy Doyle, chair of a five-member judging panel that includes actor Sarah Jessica Parker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cAll, somehow, examine identity, individual or national, and all, I think, are gripping and excellent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Founded in 1969, the Booker Prize has a reputation for transforming writers\u2019 careers and is open to novels from any country published in the U.K. and Ireland.
