Set to be published in September, <a href=\"https:\/\/guardianbookshop.com\/the-loneliness-of-sonia-and-sunny-9780241770825\/?utm_source=editoriallink&amp;utm_medium=merch&amp;utm_campaign=article\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny<\/a> took almost 20 years to write, and at 667 pages is the longest title on the list. If he takes home the \u00a350,000 award in November, he will become the first Malaysian to win the prize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Szalay, previously shortlisted in 2016 for All That Man Is, was this time put forward for <a href=\"https:\/\/guardianbookshop.com\/flesh-9780224099783\/?utm_source=editoriallink&amp;utm_medium=merch&amp;utm_campaign=article\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Flesh<\/a>, which traces the story of one man, Istv\u00e1n, from his teens to midlife. Another past shortlistee, Miller \u2013 nominated in 2001 for Oxygen \u2013 made this year\u2019s list for <a href=\"https:\/\/guardianbookshop.com\/the-land-in-winter-9781529354270\/?utm_source=editoriallink&amp;utm_medium=merch&amp;utm_campaign=article\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Land in Winter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Publisher Fitzcarraldo Editions, which has had multiple titles nominated for the International Booker prize for translated fiction, earned its first Booker longlisting this year with Buckley\u2019s 13th novel <a href=\"https:\/\/guardianbookshop.com\/one-boat-9781804271766\/?utm_source=editoriallink&amp;utm_medium=merch&amp;utm_campaign=article\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">One Boat<\/a> \u2013 which is the slimmest title on the list, coming in at 168 pages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Another independent publisher, Faber, has three titles nominated this year: Brown\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/guardianbookshop.com\/universality-9780571389018\/?utm_source=editoriallink&amp;utm_medium=merch&amp;utm_campaign=article\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Universality<\/a>, Markovits\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/guardianbookshop.com\/the-rest-of-our-lives-9780571388547\/?utm_source=editoriallink&amp;utm_medium=merch&amp;utm_campaign=article\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Rest of Our Lives<\/a>, and Claire Adam\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/guardianbookshop.com\/love-forms-9780571339549\/?utm_source=editoriallink&amp;utm_medium=merch&amp;utm_campaign=article\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Love Forms<\/a>. Penguin imprints see the highest number of titles, with five making the list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Just two debuts appear on the 2025 longlist: <a href=\"https:\/\/guardianbookshop.com\/misinterpretation-9781917092180\/?utm_source=editoriallink&amp;utm_medium=merch&amp;utm_campaign=article\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Misinterpretation<\/a> by Ledia Xhoga and <a href=\"https:\/\/guardianbookshop.com\/endling-9780349012711\/?utm_source=editoriallink&amp;utm_medium=merch&amp;utm_campaign=article\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Endling<\/a> by Maria Reva, which follows three women and an endangered snail travelling in a mobile lab through contemporary Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">It is \u201cstriking that most of the longlisted writers have already had sustained careers\u201d, said Gaby Wood, chief executive of the Booker Prize Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-12\" class=\"dcr-jzxpee\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1xjndtj\">Discover new books and learn more about your favourite authors with our expert reviews, interviews and news stories. Five British writers made this year\u2019s longlist: Brown, Buckley, Miller, Szalay \u2013 who is Hungarian-British \u2013 and Benjamin Wood for <a href=\"https:\/\/guardianbookshop.com\/seascraper-9780241741344\/?utm_source=editoriallink&amp;utm_medium=merch&amp;utm_campaign=article\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seascraper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Four American writers made the cut: Choi for her latest novel <a href=\"https:\/\/guardianbookshop.com\/flashlight-9781787335127\/?utm_source=editoriallink&amp;utm_medium=merch&amp;utm_campaign=article\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Flashlight<\/a> and Kitamura for <a href=\"https:\/\/guardianbookshop.com\/audition-9781911717324\/?utm_source=editoriallink&amp;utm_medium=merch&amp;utm_campaign=article\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Audition<\/a> along with Xhoga and Markovits. No Irish writers appear on this year\u2019s list, despite having strong representation in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Doyle said that whittling down the nominations \u201cat times\u201d was \u201cagony\u201d. 153 books were submitted, all written in English and published in the UK or Ireland between 1 October 2024 and 30 September 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Joining Doyle, Parker and Ad\u00e9b\u00e1y\u1ecd\u0300 on this year\u2019s panel is the novelist Kiley Reid as well as the writer and critic Chris Power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Parker follows other actors who have judged the prize in recent years, including Adjoa Andoh and Robert Webb. When the panel was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2024\/dec\/10\/sarah-jessica-parker-joins-judging-panel-of-2025-booker-prize\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced in December<\/a>, Wood said that in recent months she had \u201cenjoyed sharing book recommendations with Sarah Jessica, who has passionately supported contemporary fiction for many years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">In 2016, Parker began serving as editorial director at SJP for Hogarth, an imprint of Penguin, before launching her own imprint, SJP Lit, in partnership with independent publisher Zando in 2023. She also shares book recommendations on her Instagram account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The shortlist will be announced at the Southbank Centre\u2019s Royal Festival Hall on Tuesday 23 September, with the winner revealed on Monday 10 November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Last year\u2019s Booker prize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2024\/nov\/12\/orbital-by-samantha-harvey-wins-booker-prize-2024\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was won by Samantha Harvey<\/a> for her novel Orbital.
