As the episode begins, Brooke asks Ridge if he\u2019s given any more thought to Eric\u2019s surprise retirement party. Sorry, what? They\u2019re surprise retiring him? That won\u2019t go well. Right on cue, Eric enters with Donna and reminds his son that his name is on the building. Seconds later, the lot of them hear Bill hollering in Katie\u2019s office about how badly mistreated she\u2019s been. Once again, he implores her to come to Spencer, aka \u201cyour true family company.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ridge and Bill Take Turns Blowing Their Stacks<\/p>\n

Ridge immediately works himself into a lather. He doesn\u2019t like Bill roaming the FC hallways. The dressmaker can\u2019t take it, he has to go confront his nemesis. How far away is Katie\u2019s office, though? It seems to take Ridge ages to get there, considering he could hear Bill from across the hall. Why is Bill there? Ridge wants to know. \u201cTo defend the woman I love,\u201d Bill says. Can you imagine being defended at a job where your to-do list includes\u2026 not having to do diddly? Sign me up.<\/p>\n

After the commercial break, Bill lights into Ridge about him and Brooke bringing in an outside PR firm. \u201cYou treat Katie with disrespect and a lack of appreciation,\u201d Bill huffs. Does Katie feel the same way? Eh, kinda, she says. Ridge admires what Katie does. \u201cWe all do.\u201d \u201cWe\u201d who? Bill asks. Ridge, Brooke, Zende? (Poor Zende\u2026 one shout-out, and it\u2019s a dis.)<\/p>\n

Eric Gives Ridge\u2019s Sketches a \u2018Meh\u2019 Review<\/p>\n

In the CEO\u2019s office, Brooke explains Ridge\u2019s dismissive behavior by saying he\u2019s super busy. Eric can help; he just needs to be asked. When Ridge returns, he rants about Bill filling Katie\u2019s head with the notion that she\u2019s underappreciated. Eric wants a word with his son \u2014 right then. Ridge is busy but never too busy for the founder of the company, he assures Eric, cooling down.<\/p>\n

Later, the patriarch says that he doesn\u2019t like feeling like a guest in his own building. That wasn\u2019t the intention, Ridge replies. But every time they start to talk, he gets pulled away by another business call or text. Eventually, Eric offers gentle criticism of Ridge\u2019s new designs. \u201cWhat are you getting at?\u201d he asks as if it wasn\u2019t obvious.<\/p>\n

Donna Pleads Eric\u2019s Case to Brooke<\/p>\n

In the showroom, Brooke and Donna look over Ridge\u2019s new sketches and agree that he\u2019s never happy till they\u2019re perfect. That and taking on most of the CEO duties is getting to Ridge. Why doesn\u2019t he lean on Eric, \u201cthe man who taught him everything he knows\u201d? Donna asks. (Poor Zende, we learn is working on HFTF even though Deke has been chosen as the new \u201canointed one.\u201d Now there\u2019s a character who needs defending \u2014 Zende. But I digress\u2026 )<\/p>\n

Donna goes so far as to suggest that Ridge is less concerned with Eric\u2019s legacy than his own. Her spouse \u201cwants to be an important part of this company again,\u201d Donna says. He wants to be a designer, not a mascot. She explains that he\u2019s always sketching at home, and he wants to be part of the couture design team again. What about the pressure? Brooke asks. \u201cIt\u2019s who he is, Brooke.\u201d<\/p>\n

Huh\u2026 So maybe the spoiler that the show released about Eric\u2019s health was a red herring?<\/p>\n

Eric Wants to Rejoin the Couture Club<\/p>\n

Back at Spencer, Bill is still ranting and raving about how Katie is always cleaning up the Forresters\u2019 messes. \u201cIs this about you, or is it about me?\u201d she asks. It\u2019s about her, Bill insists, then apologizes for letting the volcano explode. What does Katie want? As the episode draws to a close, he backs off for fear of pressuring her.<\/p>\n

Katie appreciates Bill standing up for her. \u201cWhatever you do,\u201d he promises, \u201cI\u2019ll do anything I can to help you.\u201d She doesn\u2019t need him to fight her fights like a superhero, she points out. He\u2019ll always be there nonetheless \u2014 \u201ccape and all.\u201d Unusually witty episode, no, between this and Bill laughing about Ridge having \u201cconfidential business\u201d to attend to (what? \u201cHemming a dress?\u201d).<\/p>\n

In Forrester\u2019s main office, Eric compliments Ridge on the job he\u2019s doing as CEO \u2014 mostly singlehandedly. He\u2019s doing too much, though, Dad says. \u201cYou\u2019re drowning in it.\u201d Eric hopes the most important thing he taught Ridge was the value of collaboration. So \u201clet me back in,\u201d he asks his son, \u201cnot as some figurehead, as a co-designer. You and me together \u2014 let\u2019s make history again\u201d on the couture line.<\/p>\n
