A sense of sweet sorrow filled Jamie Lee Curtis during a TODAY show interview<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The \u201cFreakier Friday\u201d actor stopped by the show to share the magic of her upcoming Disney comedy, \u201cElla McCay,\u201d but the moment turned into something wonderfully unexpected, thanks to something blue Curtis spotted on host Craig Melvin.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the blue dot in your ear? Tell me the story,\u201d Curtis asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy daughter, years ago, she went to go get her ears pierced and she got cold feet, and in a moment of haste, I was like, \u2018If I do it, will you do it?\u2019 She\u2019s like, \u2018Yes!\u2019\u201d Melvin revealed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s gorgeous!\u201d a gleeful Curtis responded. \u201cThat\u2019s beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two eventually discussed the film, which follows a hopeful young woman (Ella McCay, played by Emma Mackey) as she navigates her chaotic family and an unexpected plunge into politics, with Curtis portraying the main character\u2019s aunt, Helen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat Ella McCay is going through is what I think we all are going through as a collective. We are all holding back. We\u2019re all holding back our feelings of frustration and outrage,\u201d the actor said. <\/p>\n

Things took an emotional turn when Melvin brought up a heartfelt video message to Curtis from fitness icon Susan Powter. The \u201cHalloween\u201d actor shared a personal connection with Powter as the executive producer of the documentary \u201cStop the Insanity: Finding Susan Powter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy hand in yours, and I\u2019m grateful it is,\u201d Powter said before thanking Curtis \u2014 who turned teary-eyed while listening \u2014 for giving so much of herself to \u201cthousands and thousands of people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Powter then punctuated the message with, \u201cThank you, Jamie Lee Curtis.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s why we\u2019re here,\u201d Curtis responded, voice catching with emotion. \u201cIt\u2019s why you love what you do. It\u2019s why you said to your daughter, \u2018You know what, if I get it, will you get it?\u2019 And you did.\u201d <\/p>\n

After some discussion about a Ken Burns documentary, Curtis expressed admiration to Melvin for keeping the earring, as well as to the show\u2019s producers for allowing him to do so.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m glad that you were able to say, \u2019This is important to me.
