{"id":324440,"date":"2025-12-04T08:18:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T08:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/324440\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T08:18:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T08:18:09","slug":"aub-students-to-fight-in-boxing-event-for-anti-knife-charity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/324440\/","title":{"rendered":"AUB students to fight in boxing event for anti-knife charity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Max Maguire, a 22-year-old film production student at Arts University Bournemouth, will be hosting and taking part in the event fundraising for Changes Are Made.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A total of 20 students will participate in matches at the Henry Brown Centre in West Howe on the evening of December 4.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>AUB Student Fight Night (Image: Max Maguire)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Max said the idea stemmed from his interest in influencer and YouTube boxing matches.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIt\u2019s beneficial to support the sport of boxing by bringing more eyes to it, but also it encourages people to have the confidence to it themselves one day,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>Marc Smith and Max Maguire holding a belt to be awarded at the fight night (Image: Max Maguire)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Max approached Marc Smith, a boxing coach mentoring young people, in early October about wanting to host an event.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI\u2019m forever indebted to him because there was no way I could have pulled it off without him,\u201d said Max.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Marc put the team in touch with the Henry Brown Centre, which hosts affordable boxing classes for young people as part of Changes Are Made (C.A.M).\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>Cameron Hamilton (Image: Family handout)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  C.A.M was set up to campaign against knife crime after 18-year-old Cameron Hamilton was fatally stabbed in Bournemouth town centre.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Max said they were originally going to support a national mental health charity but instead chose to help a local organisation.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>AUB Student Fight Night (Image: Max Maguire)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI met some of the kids [at the youth boxing] and they were so excited to be able to watch a boxing event for the first time. It encouraged me to want to support them.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Max said there is \u2018varying degrees of fitness\u2019 among the participants, most of whom have not taken part in a boxing match before.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI knew I was biting off a bit more than I could chew because I decided to not only organise the entire event single-handedly but also box someone,\u201d said Max.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He added: \u201cI\u2019m feeling pretty confident.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cI\u2019ve got a really great support network of friends and family who are coming to the event.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The university students have funded the event themselves, but Max said the risk has paid off with the amount of support.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Max said they were also eager to promote inclusivity at the event, after it was mostly men signing up.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThere was a concern that the atmosphere might be hypermasculine and then it might become a bit of a boys club.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe kept publishing the message of inclusivity, now have adaptive boxing and women on the undercard.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The sold-out event will be documented by film students, with highlight reels later posted on AUB Student Fight Night social media platforms.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Tracy Jose, grandmother of Cameron Hamilton and founder of C.A.M, said: &#8220;Changes Are Made are thrilled Max and Marc\u2019s AUB Event is happening at The Henry Brown Centre\u2014home of C.A.M Club!\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;C.A.M Club boxing and fitness has been running, every Wednesday, for a year now offering a safe and empowering space for young people between the ages of 8 &#8211; 16.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;It&#8217;s thanks to fundraising events like this, that we can keep going and carry on into the new year.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;We\u2019re so grateful for the support in raising awareness of the dangers and possible life\u2011changing consequences of carrying a knife.\u00a0 It just shows &#8211; together Changes Are Made&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Max Maguire, a 22-year-old film production student at Arts University Bournemouth, will be hosting and taking part in&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":324441,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[447],"tags":[703,49,48,82],"class_list":{"0":"post-324440","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-boxing","8":"tag-boxing","9":"tag-ca","10":"tag-canada","11":"tag-sports"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/324440","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=324440"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/324440\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/324441"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=324440"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=324440"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=324440"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
