The flu season is upon us.<\/p>\n

The Northwestern Health Unit says it has its first labratory confirmed case of influenza.<\/p>\n

The Health Unit says that means that the flu is now likely a risk in all communities in northwestern Ontario.<\/p>\n

Medical officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon suggests getting the flu vaccine and staying home if you are ill.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vaccine includes three strains, and different strains can circulate throughout the year,\u201d explains Dr. Young Hoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven a vaccine that isn\u2019t a perfect match to one strain can still provide some protection, especially against hospitalization and death. Our health care system is already stretched \u2013 anything that reduces the burden helps.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Health Unit offers these other suggestions:<\/p>\n

Avoid visiting patients\/residents in hospitals and long-term care homes when illCover coughs and sneezes, wash hands often, and clean high-touch surfacesIf you or someone you are with is at higher risk of severe infection, wear a well-fitting mask in indoor public settings.
