And sorry to say it, but yes, those rumors<\/a> linking Schwarber to the Cincinnati Reds are legitimate concerns<\/a> for Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that the Reds do have a shot at\u00a0signing Schwarber<\/a>, though I certainly wouldn\u2019t label them as the favorites,\u201d MLB.com\u2019s Mark Feinsand<\/a> reports. \u201cCincinnati is looking for a big bat in the middle of the lineup, and if Schwarber has any interest in playing close to home (he\u2019s from nearby Middletown, Ohio), the Reds are the only team that can offer him that. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt will, in all likelihood, come down to money as it does with most free agents, but GABP is a great hitters\u2019 park and should be attractive to a slugger such as Schwarber,\u201d Feinsand writes. \u201cCincy is highly unlikely to be the highest bidder, but if the offer is competitive, I don\u2019t think it\u2019s impossible. <\/p>\n

\u201cBased on conversations I have had, I would put their chances around 15%, which is a [little bit] higher than I would have said a month ago,\u201d Feinsand concludes.<\/p>\n

Money Talks<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem for Cincinnati is that the Philadelphia Phillies almost certainly will offer Schwarber more money,\u201d The Athletic\u2019s Ken Rosenthal<\/a> reports. <\/p>\n

\u201cSchwarber, who turns 33 on March 5, is probably looking at his last big contract. He is unlikely to give the Reds much of a hometown discount, if any at all. Depending upon how free agency plays out, big-market teams such as the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox also could enter the mix,\u201d Rosenthal adds.<\/p>\n

\u201cSchwarber, as much as he loves playing for the Phillies, probably is intrigued, too. But in free agency, sentiment rarely carries the day. Money matters most, and it\u2019s difficult to foresee the Reds coming up with enough,\u201d Rosenthal notes.<\/p>\n

Based on a roundup of contract predictions, Schwarber carries a price tag of nearly $30 million per year.<\/p>\n

MLB Trade Rumors<\/a>\u00a0projects Schwarber will return to Philadelphia on a five-year, $135 million contract.<\/p>\n

In September,\u00a0USA Today\u2019s Bob Nightengale<\/a>\u00a0predicted Schwarber \u201cshould command a four-year deal in excess of $120 million.\u201d<\/p>\n

In terms of numbers,\u00a0Feinsand<\/a>\u00a0was in the same ballpark as Nightengale.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmong those we spoke to, the consensus is that Schwarber should land a deal of four or five years for at least $30 million per season,\u201d Feinsand reported.<\/p>\n

ESPN\u2019s Kiley McDaniel<\/a>\u00a0polled 20 scouts, executives and agents to get a sense of Schwarber\u2019s value in free agency.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe average of all 20 projections is 4.3 years, $131.8 million, for a $30.7 million average annual value (AAV),\u201d McDaniel reported. \u201cThe median projection of those deals is $119 million.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Schwarber was\u00a0runner-up<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0National League MVP<\/a>\u00a0after\u00a0leading the league<\/a>\u00a0with a\u00a0career-high 56 home runs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The three-time All-Star\u00a0spent part of the 2021 season in Boston<\/a>\u00a0as a midseason acquisition and helped the Red Sox reach the American League Championship Series.<\/p>\n
