Over the summer, a lot of people collectively lost their minds over a Sabrina Carpenter<\/a> album cover that showed her on all fours, looking straight into the camera and gently touching an anonymous man\u2019s thigh while he grabbed a fistful of her hair. People were quick to call the Man\u2019s Best Friend cover demeaning, regressive, and a brutal blow to the project of feminism. I thought it was fun, but what do I know? After previously saying that the image\u2019s haters \u201cneed to get out more,\u201d<\/a> Carpenter has one last word on the matter.<\/p>\n

In a new Variety<\/a> profile, the singer spoke at length about the cover and people\u2019s reaction to it. For the first time since the controversy, Carpenter explained exactly what she was going for. \u201cYou can be so in control and so not in control at the same time,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was about how people try to control women, and how I felt emotionally yanked around by these relationships that I had, and how much power you\u2019re allowing yourself to give them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carpenter also reflected on the controversy in her characteristically chill way. \u201cIt meant one thing to me and 100 things to other people, and I was looking at it going, \u2018That\u2019s valid. Mine\u2019s valid. What\u2019s for dinner?\u2019\u201d she told the magazine. \u201cNot to bypass the weight that it did carry for some people. I saw it and was like, \u2018That is a great point. It wasn\u2019t the point I was trying to make.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the backlash, Carpenter did release an alternative, less provocative cover<\/a>, which sort of made it seem like she\u2019d course-corrected after people deemed her the world\u2019s top upholder of the patriarchy. Turns out that wasn\u2019t the case. \u201cOh, girl,\u201d Carpenter clarified, \u201cI just wanted to take more pictures!\u201d<\/p>\n
