SALEM, Va. — The University of Chicago women’s soccer team saw their season come to an end in one of the longest penalty shootouts in NCAA Division III women’s soccer history on Thursday night. The Maroons tied #1 WashU 1-1 in regulation before falling 10-9 in penalty kicks.<\/p>\n
From the opening whistle, UChicago was applying the pressure with multiple chances early on. Indira Naylor<\/a> ripped a shot that was saved by the WashU keeper in the fifth minute to keep the game scoreless. However, just three minutes later, the Maroons found the breakthrough\u00a0when Kamiryn Braxton Grimes<\/a> found Lucy Harrison-Caldwell<\/a> in the middle of the field. Harrison-Caldwell found Annabel Edwards down the left-hand side who finished through the legs of the WashU keeper to put UChicago on top 1-0.<\/p>\n The Maroons fought and clawed with some top-level defending to keep the 1-0 advantage after the opening 45 minutes. In the second half, UChicago would continue to battle on both sides with neither team willing to give an inch. In the 52nd minute, Ella Cho had a great chance to double the lead, but the WashU keeper sprawled to her right to tip the shot wide to keep the UChicago lead at one.<\/p>\n In the 67th minute, WashU had a great look from distance, but\u00a0Sophia Sasaki\u00a0leaped off her line to tip the shot\u00a0off the crossbar. However, the Bears were there on the rebound to find the equalizer.<\/p>\n The remainder of regulation and both overtime periods\u00a0were a physical battle from both sides with neither squad allowing anything easy on either side of the ball. Then, as the clock struck 110 minutes, the\u00a0Bears and Maroons headed to penalty kicks following their seventh draw in the last eight meetings between the UAA rivals.<\/p>\n After having the best game of her career with eight saves and several other interventions, Sophia Sasaki came up huge in the penalty shootout with three saves to keep the Maroons alive, but in the end, WashU came out on top 10-9 in the longest penalty shootout in school history and one of the longest penalty shootouts in Division III history.<\/p>\n With the draw, the Maroons wrap up their season with a 16-2-4 record on the season and their sixth Final Four appearance in program history.<\/p>\n The game marks the end of the career for a remarkable class of seniors that made a major difference for the team over the past four years. That senior class includes Sophia Sasaki, Milly Koenig, Layne Kohler, Ariel Alleyne, Anna Chard, Avery Gallucci, and Mary Stuart Kerrigan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
