They’ll make sure that their little ones have exactly what they need—and ensuring safety while babies sleep is always a top priority. This is also true in the animal kingdom—although the setting and the dangers look a little different!

In a recent TikTok video shared by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, we got an up-close view of just how protective elephants are of their young—and it just melted our hearts!

After trekking across the land for several hours, the Umani elephant herd was slowed to a standstill by three very tired babies. The matriarchal mamas and aunties immediately formed a circle of protection around the little ones to keep them safe while they rested.

Mama (and auntie) elephants are very protective of their baby pachyderms, but they don’t just look out for their own little one—they actually watch over all the calves in the herd.

As the video begins, we see little Sulwi, Zigi, and Lenny—each just a few months old—lying at the base of some trees. The older female elephants surround them, standing firm in their circle so the little ones can sleep in peace.

It’s like they have a built-in security blanket, and it is remarkable to see how soundly the babies rest knowing that they are being guarded from harm and potential predators.

One viewer commented, “Lovely little sleepy babies! And where’s little Mwana? Does she not also nap with them?” The Sheldrick Wildlife Keepers replied, “Mwana is outgrowing such frequent naptimes—now she’s part of the nanny guard!”

Related: Elephants Play Tug-of-War with Garden Hose Just Like Giant Toddlers

The work that the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust does to preserve the elephant population in Africa is inspiring. They do a wonderful job of sharing knowledge and educating the public about the animals they save and the reasons why.

Why Would an Elephant Herd Leave a Baby Behind?

One person questioned why a herd would leave a little one behind. The Trust responded with a very thoughtful explanation and said, “Elephants are incredibly family-oriented, but they are also wild animals who must be focused on survival—and for elephants, that means being constantly on the move, be it to avoid humans or find ample food and water. When they evaluate a situation to be ‘hopeless’ (a calf stuck in a well or too weak to keep up with the herd), they make the difficult but necessary choice to prioritize the safety of the herd and move on.”

Thankfully, the three littlest pachyderms in this herd will not have to worry about being left behind. Their mamas were previously rescue elephants who were cared for and raised by the Sheldrick keepers. It’s the circle of life and it is amazingly special!

Elephant Herd Circles Around Napping Calves in Heartwarming Display of Protection first appeared on PetHelpful on Jul 29, 2025

This story was originally reported by PetHelpful on Jul 29, 2025, where it first appeared.

Elephant Herd Circles Around Napping Calves in Heartwarming Display of Protection originally appeared on PetHelpful.
