{"id":327295,"date":"2025-12-05T15:48:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T15:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/327295\/"},"modified":"2025-12-05T15:48:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T15:48:09","slug":"single-atom-setup-settles-einstein-bohr-challenge-with-new-clarity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/327295\/","title":{"rendered":"Single-atom setup settles Einstein\u2013Bohr challenge with new clarity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Quantum physics just delivered a full-circle moment a century in the making.<\/p>\n<p>A team of researchers at University of Science and Technology of China (USTC)\u00a0 has reconstructed one of Albert Einstein\u2019s most famous attempts to poke holes in quantum theory, and the results land squarely in Niels Bohr\u2019s camp.<\/p>\n<p>Using an exquisitely sensitive single-atom interferometer, researchers led by Pan Jianwei have brought Einstein\u2019s 1927 thought experiment into the real world with unprecedented precision.<\/p>\n<p>Their setup shows, once again, that the quantum world refuses to let us see everything at once.<\/p>\n<p>Einstein had argued that it should be possible to determine a photon\u2019s path without destroying its wave interference pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Bohr countered that the universe simply doesn\u2019t work that way as some of its properties are fundamentally incompatible in a single measurement. Nearly 100 years later, the Chinese team found nature siding with Bohr.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement cited by South China Morning Post (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3335238\/chinese-physicists-prove-einstein-wrong-and-put-century-old-debate-end\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">SCMP<\/a>), reviewers of the work called the experiment \u201ca significant contribution to the foundations of quantum mechanics,\u201d praising it as \u201cbeautiful\u201d and \u201ca textbook realisation of a century-old thought experiment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A century\u2019s echo returns<\/p>\n<p>The project revisits the iconic double-slit experiment, where single photons behave like both particles and waves.<\/p>\n<p>Einstein\u2019s twist was to insert a movable, ultra-light object into the setup that could register the photon\u2019s minuscule \u201ckick\u201d and reveal which slit it used.<\/p>\n<p>In 1927, no detector on Earth was sensitive enough to measure that recoil. <\/p>\n<p>Pan\u2019s team solved the problem by trapping a single rubidium atom in laser light and chilling it to near absolute zero. This lone atom effectively became Einstein\u2019s movable slit.<\/p>\n<p>When the atom was loosely held, it wobbled just enough to betray the photon\u2019s trajectory. But the interference pattern vanished.<\/p>\n<p>When the atom was tightly confined, the wobble disappeared, the photon\u2019s path became unknowable, and interference returned, exactly as Bohr predicted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy tuning the photons\u2019 momentum uncertainty,\u201d an accompanying American Physical Society (APS) article explained, Pan\u2019s team could \u201cmake the fringes more or less blurry, in line with theory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New doors to open<\/p>\n<p>Although the result doesn\u2019t overturn quantum mechanics (Bohr won this argument long ago), it creates one of the cleanest testbeds to probe the subtler corners of quantum theory.<\/p>\n<p>The experiment\u2019s single-atom control gives physicists a rare ability to study how quantum systems lose their coherence or become <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/science\/engineers-create-quantum-entangled-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">entangled<\/a> with their surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>According to the APS article, the setup \u201chas the potential to explore other, less established aspects of <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/science\/quantum-gravity-einstein-entropy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">quantum mechanics<\/a>,\u201d including how entanglement and decoherence influence each other.<\/p>\n<p>Those questions matter far beyond academic debates.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding how quantum states degrade could help engineer more stable qubits, build ultra-precise sensors, and refine quantum communication networks.<\/p>\n<p>The results were published in <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prl\/abstract\/10.1103\/93zb-lws3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Physical Review Letters<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Quantum physics just delivered a full-circle moment a century in the making.
