But Roscosmos <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/roscosmos_gk\/18813\" rel=\"nofollow\">announced<\/a>\u00a0Tuesday, Dec. 2, that Artemyev had been replaced by fellow cosmonaut Andrei Fedyayev.<\/p>\n<p>Roscosmos did not address the reason for Artemyev&#8217;s removal from the mission, only stating that he was transferred to another job. The USA TODAY Network left a message Friday, Dec. 5, with NASA seeking more information.<\/p>\n<p>However, a report from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theins.ru\/news\/287330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Insider<\/a>, an independent Russian investigative news outlet, suggests that Artemyev is accused of violating U.S. national security regulations by photographing sensitive SpaceX documents and technology during training. When will it launch?<\/p>\n<p>As the name suggests,\u00a0Crew-12\u00a0will be NASA and SpaceX&#8217;s 11th human science expedition to the International Space Station.<\/p>\n<p>The mission, which is due to launch in February from Florida, will include four international spacefarers, including two still unannounced NASA astronauts. In addition to Fedyayev, Artemyev&#8217;s replacement, French astronaut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Human_and_Robotic_Exploration\/Astronauts\/Sophie_Adenot\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Human_and_Robotic_Exploration\/Astronauts\/Sophie_Adenot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sophie Adenot<\/a> of the European Space Agency is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Human_and_Robotic_Exploration\/ESA_astronauts_Sophie_Adenot_and_Raphael_Liegeois_assigned_for_Space_Station_mission\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Human_and_Robotic_Exploration\/ESA_astronauts_Sophie_Adenot_and_Raphael_Liegeois_assigned_for_Space_Station_mission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reportedly a crew member on the mission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The missions, most of which last about six months, are contracted under NASA&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/commercial-space\/commercial-crew-program\/commercial-crew-program-overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">commercial crew program<\/a>. The program allows the space agency to pay SpaceX to launch and transport astronauts and cargo to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/space\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">orbit<\/a> aboard the company&#8217;s own vehicles, freeing up NASA to focus on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/09\/25\/nasa-artemis-moon-mission-date\/86341332007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/09\/25\/nasa-artemis-moon-mission-date\/86341332007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">its Artemis lunar program<\/a>\u00a0and other spaceflight missions, including future\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/21\/starship-launch-mars-elon-musk\/85726892007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/21\/starship-launch-mars-elon-musk\/85726892007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">crewed voyages to Mars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX uses its Falcon 9 rocket \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2025\/07\/23\/spacex-rocket-launch-starlink-satellites-california-florida\/85324371007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">one of the most active in the world<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 to launch the crew missions from Launch Complex 39A at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2025\/07\/09\/florida-vacation-rocket-launch-spacex-nasa-orlando-theme-parks-disney\/84489019007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NASA\u2019s Kennedy Space Center<\/a>. The astronauts themselves ride a Dragon crew capsule \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/06\/06\/trump-elon-musk-spacex-contracts-dragon\/84066587007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the only U.S. spacecraft capable of carrying astronauts<\/a>\u00a0to and from the space station \u2013 that separates from the rocket in orbit.<\/p>\n<p>NASA is also hoping to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/11\/25\/starliner-rocket-launch-nasa-boeing-stuck-astronauts\/87461686007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/11\/25\/starliner-rocket-launch-nasa-boeing-stuck-astronauts\/87461686007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">certify Boeing&#8217;s Starliner capsule<\/a> to add a second operational vehicle for missions to the ISS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/11\/04\/international-space-station-nasa-deorbit\/87069665007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/11\/04\/international-space-station-nasa-deorbit\/87069665007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">before the station is retired by 2030<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Russian launch pad damaged<\/p>\n<p>Artemyev&#8217;s removal from the mission is the latest recent blow to Russia&#8217;s spaceflight program after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2025\/12\/02\/russian-launch-pad-damaged\/87563256007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2025\/12\/02\/russian-launch-pad-damaged\/87563256007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the nation&#8217;s launch pad was damaged at the end of November<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The launch pad at the Baikonur Cosmodrome was damaged after a Roscosmos capsule, known as Soyuz MS-28, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2025\/11\/25\/nasa-astronaut-space-station-soyuz-launch\/87444385007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2025\/11\/25\/nasa-astronaut-space-station-soyuz-launch\/87444385007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">launched Thursday, Nov. 27<\/a>. The launch helped to propel a crew of three, including a NASA astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts, to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/11\/02\/international-space-station-25-year-anniversary\/86980264007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">International Space Station<\/a> for an eight-month stay.<\/p>\n<p>Roscosmos, Russia&#8217;s space agency, was quoted in Russian news agencies as saying damage was observed after an inspection of the launch area, and that it was expected to be repaired quickly, Reuters\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/science\/baikonur-launch-pad-damaged-after-russian-soyuz-launch-international-space-2025-11-27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Until that time, any of Russian&#8217;s missions to the International Space Station would have to be put on hold.<\/p>\n<p>Who is on the International Space Station?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/whoisinspace.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/whoisinspace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ten people<\/a> are living and working about the International Space Station, but that will soon change.<\/p>\n<p>NASA astronaut Jonny Kim and cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2025\/04\/08\/nasa-astronaut-jonny-kim-launch-iss-soyuz-spacecraft\/82987236007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2025\/04\/08\/nasa-astronaut-jonny-kim-launch-iss-soyuz-spacecraft\/82987236007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">who reached the ISS in April<\/a> on a Soyuz MS-27 capsule, are due to depart Monday, Dec. 8, for a landing in remote Kazakhstan, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-sets-coverage-for-astronaut-jonny-kim-crewmates-return\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-sets-coverage-for-astronaut-jonny-kim-crewmates-return\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NASA<\/a>. Their impending return to Earth would come less than two weeks after their replacements arrived on the Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>Those three spacefarers \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/astronauts\/nasa-astronaut-christopher-l-williams\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA astronaut Chris Williams<\/a>\u00a0and Russians Sergey Mikaev and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov \u2013 are the newest additions at the orbital laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>Also on the station are four astronauts who are part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/07\/24\/spacex-nasa-crew-11-launch\/85341262007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/07\/24\/spacex-nasa-crew-11-launch\/85341262007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">joint NASA and SpaceX\u00a0mission\u00a0known as Crew-11<\/a>. Among them are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/18\/auroras-northern-lights-nasa-astronaut-space-station\/85706118007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/08\/18\/auroras-northern-lights-nasa-astronaut-space-station\/85706118007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NASA astronaut Zena Cardman<\/a>; NASA astronaut\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/people\/edward-michael-mike-fincke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mike Fincke<\/a>; Japanese astronaut\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/humans-in-space.jaxa.jp\/en\/astronaut\/yui-kimiya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Kimiya Yui<\/a>\u00a0of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA); and Russian Oleg Platonov, a Roscosmos cosmonaut.<\/p>\n<p>Crew-11\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/blogs\/spacestation\/2025\/08\/01\/nasas-spacex-crew-11-launches-to-international-space-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">launched<\/a>\u00a0Aug. 1 from the Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral, Florida, as the spacefarers made their venture to space aboard a Dragon capsule\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/news\/2025\/08\/01\/spacex-launches-nasa-crew-11-falcon-9-dragon-to-iss-space-station-from-florida-kennedy-space-center\/85445039007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">that was propelled into orbit<\/a>\u00a0atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
