The province\u2019s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a man was fatally shot by Toronto police early Saturday morning at Danforth GO Station.<\/p>\n

Toronto police were called to the station shortly after 1:30 a.m. for reports of a person armed with a gun.<\/p>\n

Officers located a man in the stairwell of the station.<\/p>\n

According to the SIU, there was an interaction during which one officer fired their weapon multiple times in the stairwell.<\/p>\n

Paramedics found the man suffering from several gunshot wounds and without vital signs inside the tunnel connecting the platforms.<\/p>\n

He was rushed to St. Michael\u2019s Hospital in life-threatening condition, with CPR in progress, and was later pronounced dead.<\/p>\n

SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon said investigators are working to understand the sequence of events.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is still very early in the investigation,\u201d Hudon said. \u201cWe are collecting evidence, reviewing video, and speaking with officers to determine exactly what transpired.\u201d<\/p>\n

The SIU says investigators have recovered both the police firearm and another firearm believed to have belonged to the man. CCTV footage and internal police video will also be reviewed.<\/p>\n

Three SIU investigators and two forensic specialists have been assigned to the case. One subject officer and four witness officers have been designated. A post-mortem is scheduled for Monday in Toronto.<\/p>\n

The Toronto Police Association said its leadership attended the scene overnight to support officers involved.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo police officer starts their shift wanting or intending to use force,\u201d the association said in a statement. \u201cBut when the public calls, they respond to dangerous, unpredictable situations and make split-second decisions to keep everyone safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement from Metrolinx Saturday late afternoon, they said, \u201cToronto Police have completed their investigation at Danforth GO, all Lakeshore East trains will now stop at the station.<\/p>\n

SIU is still investigating the incident. Any witnesses with information are asked to contact the authorities.<\/p>\n
