And AI gutting the middle class and ending my career.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Kristjan, 35, started working right after high school while he was still living with his parents. He taught himself 3-D animation from materials available online and has since built a lucrative career. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThat\u2019s where the saving began,\u201d says Kristjan, who, along with his partner, has about a million dollars in savings and investments, plus a house on which they owe $221,000. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Kristjan knows that investing early and often can be powerful, and has prioritized doing so throughout his career \u2013 even if that meant forgoing time off or needed home maintenance. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI lean so heavily on the side of compounding gains,\u201d said Kristjan, who works often with American clients and makes about $1,000 a day right now, after the exchange rate. Kristjan has found it difficult to justify taking time off, considering that even a week of vacation would mean losing out on $5,000. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">He described a time where he worked two back-to-back eight-hour stretches in the same day for different clients, rather than turn down the work. Kristjan and his partner recently went on a month-long vacation, his lengthiest break by far since he started working. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIt was the first time I just let myself not think about work for a month. It really opened my eyes to how much I had just been grinding,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/personal-finance\/article-paycheque-project-saver-ray-financial-advice\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ray, a \u2018saver\u2019 with a $70,000 salary, bought a B.C. condo at age 22 and a Corvette in cash a few years ago<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Paying a big chunk of his income to taxes pushed Kristjan to incorporate, and he accumulated a significant sum in the corporation, which he owned with his partner. To get that cash out, he performed a surplus strip, a complex tax-driven maneuver that allows owners to get funds out of a corporation at capital-gains tax-rates rather than dividend rates. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.budget.canada.ca\/2023\/report-rapport\/chap6-en.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.budget.canada.ca\/2023\/report-rapport\/chap6-en.html\">2023 federal budget closed this opportunity<\/a> and since he knew the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/personal-finance\/taxes\/article-its-not-too-early-to-think-about-year-end-tax-planning\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/personal-finance\/taxes\/article-its-not-too-early-to-think-about-year-end-tax-planning\/\">rules were changing<\/a>, Kristjan hustled to execute the move. Rushing ahead of the deadline caused him a lot of stress because if the money ended up being taxed as income, he would have lost a significant amount.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI did it a week before the decision making it illegal was about to be ratified,\u201d he said, adding that he had \u201cserious moral qualms about pursuing\u201d the surplus strip, but also wanted to keep as much of the money he had earned as possible. \u201cI might have been the last person in the country to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI ended up in therapy after that week,\u201d he said. \u201cI had stress-induced tinnitus and lots of sleep loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His typical monthly expenses:<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Investment and savings: $500<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$500 to TFSA<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Servicing debt: $1,600<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$1,600 to mortgage<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Household and transportation: $1,439<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$140 to property insurance<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$225 to property tax<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$150 to utilities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$50 on small household repairs<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$160 on gasoline<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$350 on car insurance. \u201cTwo cars, one recreational vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$140 on car maintenance<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$20 on Uber or taxis<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$120 on cellphones <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$84 on internet<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Food and drink: $660<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$450 on groceries<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$180 at restaurants. \u201cAt peak stress, was spending $500 a month on DoorDash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$30 on alcohol<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Miscellaneous: $2,385<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$150 on going out<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$90 on nicotine gum and pouches. \u201cAiming for 0 in 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$65 on streaming services. \u201cNetflix, YouTube Premium, Spotify, Amazon Prime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$80 on clothing. \u201cRarely buy clothes, more replacing shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$25 playing squash<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$40 on subscriptions. \u201cNewspapers, Patreon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$150 on pets. \u201cSome crazy overnight vet bills this year.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">$500 on cycling. \u201c$6,000 on a bicycle.
