MMA \u2013 The Federation of International Mixed Martial Arts (FIMMA) has been officially founded in Athens, marking a historic moment for the international future of mixed martial arts (MMA).<\/p>\n
Representatives from close to 50 countries and regions worldwide, through their National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and national MMA federations, came together to endorse a clear, united path forward for the sport and to support FIMMA\u2019s ambition of securing MMA\u2019s place at the Olympic Games.<\/p>\n
FIMMA\u2019s establishment reflects the growing international demand for a unifying, transparent, and athlete-centred governing body capable of driving sustainable global growth for MMA.<\/p>\n
With the FIMMA founding meeting taking place in Greece, the birthplace of the Olympic Games and unarmed combat sport, a symbolic link was created between MMA\u2019s future and its origins.<\/p>\n
FIMMA has been co-founded by Asian Mixed Martial Arts Association (AMMA) president Gordon Tang, whose work secured MMA\u2019s debut as a medal sport at the 2026 Asian Games, the 2026 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, and the recently held third Asian Youth Games 2025 in Bahrain.<\/p>\n
Hellenic Olympic Committee president Isidoros Kouvelos joins Tang as co-founder.<\/p>\n
\u201cFIMMA will serve as the unifying force that elevates MMA from continental success to the global stage,\u201d said Tang.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur partnership with the International Olympic Academy (IOA) and ongoing discussions with continental bodies show we are building the infrastructure and relationships necessary for Olympic recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n
The founding meeting of FIMMA was significantly strengthened by the presence and support of Olympic movement leaders from every continent, signalling broad continental alignment around the federation\u2019s mission and its pathway toward inclusion in upcoming multi-sport events.<\/p>\n
Philippines Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino also provided his important endorsement and support for FIMMA\u2019s establishment.<\/p>\n
In a significant development for the sport\u2019s technical advancement, FIMMA has established a partnership with the IOA to conduct a comprehensive developmental programme for MMA coaches and referees.<\/p>\n
This initiative aims to raise technical and safety standards across the sport globally, establishing the professional infrastructure necessary for Olympic-level competition.<\/p>\n
The programme will focus on developing world-class coaching methodologies, referee training standards, and athlete safety protocols that align with Olympic Movement values and requirements.<\/p>\n
FIMMA director general Galastein Tan added: \u201cOur mission is simple \u2013 put athletes first and deliver the world-class platforms they deserve.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs we continue FIMMA\u2019s expansion, our focus now is on solidifying our membership base, securing MMA\u2019s place in more continental events, and laying out a transparent pathway toward the Olympic Games.<\/p>\n
