{"id":333326,"date":"2025-12-08T23:01:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T23:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/333326\/"},"modified":"2025-12-08T23:01:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T23:01:11","slug":"trump-threatens-severe-tariffs-on-canadian-fertilizer-if-we-have-to","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/333326\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump threatens \u2018severe\u2019 tariffs on Canadian fertilizer \u2018if we have to\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday he may impose \u201cvery severe <a href=\"http:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/donald-trump-tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs<\/a>\u201d on <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/fertilizer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fertilizer<\/a> from Canada \u201cif we have to\u201d in order to bolster domestic production.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765086924_279_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Trump made the comment while taking questions from reporters during a roundtable event at the White House where he announced a US$12-billion tariff relief fund for American farmers, who have been facing rising costs for agricultural inputs like seed and fertilizer amid Trump\u2019s global trade war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of (fertilizer) does come in from Canada, and so we\u2019ll end up putting very severe tariffs on that, if we have to, because that\u2019s the way you want to bolster here,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said her department and others were working on a plan to reshore fertilizer production to the U.S., while also directing fertilizer manufacturers and other industrial players to lower their prices.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president has been very unequivocal in saying we have to figure out why all these input costs are skyrocketing,\u201d Rollins said.<\/p>\n<p>Many U.S. farmers rely on Canadian potash fertilizer from Saskatchewan in order to add potassium to their soils. Chuck Grassley of Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>That tariff only applies to quantities of fertilizer exports to the U.S. that exceed limits under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on free trade (CUSMA).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/us-canadian-farmers-face-soaring-fertilizer-prices-amid-trump-trade-war-2025-03-07\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Canadian and U.S. farmers said in March<\/a> they were facing higher fertilizer bills amid Trump\u2019s trade war. The administration is holding back the remaining US$1 billion for fruits, vegetables and other crops to finalize the details, Rollins said.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the payments will be a \u201cliquidity bridge during a period of adjustment\u201d to support farmers until they see benefits from Trump\u2019s trade deals and other policies.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Money<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis relief will provide much-needed certainty to farmers as they get this year\u2019s harvest to market and look ahead to next year\u2019s crops, and it\u2019ll help them continue their efforts to lower food prices for American families,\u201d Trump said during the White House event.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has said it is examining the higher costs for agricultural products and machinery. Soybean farmers expect to see their third consecutive year of losses in 2025, according to the American Soybean Association.<\/p>\n<p>During his first term, Trump gave about US$23 billion in aid to farmers hurt by his trade policies.
