Weight-loss jabs <\/a>could have a hidden benefit for a particular group of breast cancer<\/a> patients, a new study has found.<\/p>\n

Scientists studying the \u201coverlooked\u201d hormone estrone, which is produced in fat tissue, have said it could be linked to an increased risk of death from breast cancer<\/a> in postmenopausal women with obesity<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The research from Dr Joyce Slingerland at Georgetown University suggests that these women may benefit from GLP-1 medications, a group of popular weight-loss drugs including<\/a> Ozempic<\/a> and Mounjaro<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dr Slingerland analysed data on women diagnosed with estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer<\/a> \u2013 the most common and deadly form of the disease in women after menopause.<\/p>\n

The hormone estrone was found to be a major driver of breast cancer in obese postmenopausal women (PA)<\/p>\n

She found that in postmenopausal women with obesity<\/a>, the major driver of breast cancer<\/a> is estrone. This is different to premenopausal women, whose primary form of estrogen is 17\u03b2-estradiol.<\/p>\n

Estrone is produced in fat tissue, and can join with certain proteins to activate genes that trigger inflammation.<\/p>\n

Dr Slingerland\u2019s research has shown that high estrone levels propel intense inflammatory activity, setting off a cascade that causes precancerous changes and activates cancer-fuelling genes.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also evidence that estrone and the inflammation it causes can harm the immune system\u2019s ability to detect and kill cancer cells, she said.<\/p>\n

She now believes studies analysing GLP-1 drugs<\/a> in women with ER-positive breast cancer who have obesity<\/a> are a \u201clogical and compelling next step\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe GLP-1 drugs have revolutionised weight loss<\/a>,\u201d Dr Slingerland said. \u201cBecause of estrone\u2019s powerful inflammatory effects in fat, there\u2019s real potential that, by inducing weight loss<\/a>, GLP-1 drugs can pump the brakes on estrone\u2019s cancer-fuelling behaviour.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr Kotryna Temcinaite, senior research and impact communications lead at charity Breast Cancer Now said it is estimated that, in the UK, around 8 per cent of breast cancers are linked to being overweight or obese.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere, researchers highlight that the different forms of the hormone oestrogen present before and after menopause could be behind this,\u201d she told The Independent. \u201cOestrogen is what the most common type of breast cancer, called ER-positive, relies on to grow. And people living with obesity<\/a> have much higher oestrogen levels.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe now need to better understand how different weight-loss approaches \u2013 including weight-loss medications, physical activity and dietary changes \u2013 could help to reduce oestrogen levels. Either used alongside breast cancer treatment or to prevent the disease.<\/p>\n
