{"id":335023,"date":"2025-12-09T17:51:14","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T17:51:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/335023\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T17:51:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T17:51:14","slug":"cdcs-annual-abortion-report-delayed-amid-agency-turmoil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/335023\/","title":{"rendered":"CDC\u2019s annual abortion report delayed amid agency turmoil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp3kd1001z2cqj62ib6ljx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been tracking abortion trends for decades, but this year\u2019s report \u2014 including some of the earliest federal data reflecting the effect of significant changes to abortion access nationwide \u2013 has been pushed back until spring amid turmoil at the federal agency.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp3zxs00043b6nj4jed5lx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Each year, states and jurisdictions voluntarily report data that they\u2019ve collected to the CDC for a national analysis, a process that has been happening in some form since 1969. The CDC compiles that information into a report that\u2019s typically published in late November.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp3zxs00053b6nncoiycrx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US Department of Health and Human Services blames former CDC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Debra Houry for the delay of this year\u2019s abortion surveillance report, saying in a statement that Houry \u201cdirected staff to return state-submitted abortion data rather than analyze it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp3zxs00063b6nzs44auxh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Houry denies this claim, instead saying that major layoffs at HHS this year left the CDC without the staff it needed to do the work.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp3zxs00073b6nkkp2v42z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/01\/health\/staff-cuts-at-federal-health-agencies-have-begun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thousands of people were laid off<\/a> \u200bfrom HHS in April, Houry says, she helped lead a transition management team that developed agency-wide approaches to manage the effects of the layoffs, including coordinated communication. At that time, she says, the agency had also implemented a policy in which all external communication \u2014 including to partners at state and local health departments \u2014 had to be approved by a communications office led by politically appointed staff during the initial weeks after the layoffs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp3zxs00083b6ns3ks97o7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe policy that was proposed by the agency to us \u2014 that we signed off on \u2014 was that there\u2019s no funding, no staff, and not statutorily required [so] the program can\u2019t do the work,\u201d she told CNN. \u201cThe politicals were all aware, back in April, that this was one of the programs that couldn\u2019t continue, along with many others.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp8fut00003b6q3ubir2za@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An HHS official told CNN that Houry did not follow this process of checking with political appointees or other agency leadership before shutting down the abortion surveillance data project, but HHS didn\u2019t respond to a request for details about how or when it heard about the supposed action by Houry.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp3zxs000a3b6njet1g657@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Houry was one of several high-level veteran agency officials who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/27\/health\/cdc-director-monarez\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resigned<\/a> in protest in August after CDC Director Dr. Susan Monarez was fired just weeks after she had been sworn in to the position. The exiting leaders described censorship, communication failures and the weaponization of public health by HHS in resignation letters, social media posts and statements from attorneys.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp3zxs000b3b6noou15o9d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The delayed CDC abortion surveillance report is expected to include data through 2023, the first full year after the US Supreme Court Dobbs decision that revoked the federal right to an abortion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp3zxs000c3b6nbg25vt19@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Researchers outside the federal government have also started tracking abortion trends in the US in the past few years, and a new <a href=\"https:\/\/societyfp.org\/research\/wecount\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">#WeCount report<\/a> sponsored by the Society of Family Planning shows that the number of abortions provided in the US has continued to increase post-Dobbs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp3zxs000d3b6nda0by14s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There were an average of nearly 99,000 abortions each month in the first half of 2025, up about 4% from the monthly average last year, according to the report, which was published Tuesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp3zxs000e3b6n8ypakak7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most abortions in the US still happen in person, but the latest #WeCount data shows that medication abortions provided through telehealth account for all of the increase so far this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixpdozz00033b6qugcqgpc7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the first half of 2025, 27% of all abortions within the US health care system were provided via telehealth, up from less than 10% in the first half of 2023.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp3zxs000f3b6n8uw4gst1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More than half of the telehealth abortions in the US are now provided under shield laws, which offer some legal protections for providers who practice in some states where abortion remains legal to prescribe medication abortion drugs via telehealth to people living in states with bans or restrictions. In June, nearly 15,000 abortions were provided under shield laws in the US, #WeCount data shows.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp3zxs000g3b6nbjr8qqnb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAbortion bans don\u2019t stop people from needing and pursuing essential abortion care,\u201d Dr. Alison Norris, co-chair of the #WeCount research project and professor at The Ohio State University\u2019s College of Public Health, said in a statement. \u201cTelehealth is helping people in states with bans to access abortion care \u2013 and yet it isn\u2019t the answer for everyone. Abortion bans are causing harm, and all too often, your access to healthcare depends on where you live and how much money you have.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp3zxs000h3b6nax981oxq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although abortion surveillance data from the CDC is a bit older than data reported by #WeCount and other research organizations like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/30\/health\/abortion-trends-guttmacher-first-half-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guttmacher Institute<\/a>, experts say it still adds critical pieces to the overall picture.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp7xzf000n3b6n6tbqldbv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI thought the CDC data set was helpful because it came from health departments, it was anonymized, and it used the same questions year after year, so it\u2019s able to track trends over a long period of time,\u201d Houry said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixpenui00053b6qlm3xplm1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But layoffs left the department without the subject-matter experts who understand the nuances of the project.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmixp809l000p3b6nqt4d5ezd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s really hard to replace people,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is the thing that\u2019s happening for any programs that don\u2019t have funding or staff, because I don\u2019t know how you do work if you don\u2019t have funding or staff.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been tracking abortion trends for decades, but this year\u2019s&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":335024,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[34],"tags":[49,48,84,392],"class_list":{"0":"post-335023","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-healthcare","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-health","11":"tag-healthcare"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/335023","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=335023"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/335023\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/335024"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=335023"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=335023"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=335023"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
