{"id":335311,"date":"2025-12-09T20:54:15","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T20:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/335311\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T20:54:15","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T20:54:15","slug":"poilievre-to-force-vote-on-motion-about-liberal-support-for-pipeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/335311\/","title":{"rendered":"Poilievre to force vote on motion about Liberal support for pipeline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An effort by Conservative Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/pierre-poilievre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Pierre Poilievre<\/a> to force the Liberal government to reaffirm its commitment to a new pipeline to the West Coast will face a debate and recorded vote in the House of Commons on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765086924_279_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The motion also seeks to get a commitment from the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/liberals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Liberals<\/a> to override <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11546507\/bc-tanker-ban-explainer-pipeline-deal-alberta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the northern British Columbia oil tanker ban<\/a> if necessary in order to get that pipeline built, despite opposition from Coastal First Nations and the B.C. government.<\/p>\n<p>Liberals said Tuesday they will vote against the motion, accusing Poilievre of seeking division and \u201cplaying games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanadians see the motion before us today for what it is: it\u2019s a cynical ploy to divide us, it\u2019s a cheap political stunt,\u201d Energy Minister Tim Hodgson told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>The motion directly cites language in <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11546159\/carney-pipeline-deal-alberta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the memorandum of understanding signed between Ottawa and Alberta<\/a> last month that sets the stage for a bitumen pipeline that will increase oil exports to Asia from a yet-unnamed deep-water port in B.C.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'B.C. Coastal First Nations oppose Conservative motion on Liberal pipeline plan, overriding tanker ban\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The agreement includes a federal commitment to \u201cenable\u201d such a project, \u201cincluding if necessary through an appropriate adjustment to the Oil Tanker Moratorium Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Conservative motion quotes that language and adds \u201cwhile respecting the duty to consult Indigenous Peoples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Poilievre says he wants to put all individual Liberal MPs on the record on whether they now support a pipeline and changes to the tanker ban, which was enacted in 2019 under former prime minister Justin Trudeau. This motion was designed to create risk, because this motion is designed not to get a pipeline built but instead to try and poke at people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hodgson, when asked Tuesday if voting \u201cno\u201d will create uncertainty for potential pipeline proponents, said the MOU as a whole sends the right message to industry.<\/p>\n<p>Gull-Masty added the MOU shows clarity and \u201cmaturity\u201d by clearly stating the intent to consult and collaborate with all affected parties before a project is approved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s motion that\u2019s being put on the floor is not a \u2018no\u2019 vote for the MOU.
