{"id":335485,"date":"2025-12-09T22:37:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T22:37:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/335485\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T22:37:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T22:37:08","slug":"prendas-ciclismo-owner-returns-to-profit-and-proud-to-have-stabilised-despite-heavy-bike-industry-downturn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/335485\/","title":{"rendered":"Prendas Ciclismo owner returns to profit and &#8220;proud to have stabilised&#8221; despite heavy bike industry downturn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Retro cycling brand Prendas Ciclismo, along with premium and custom brand Shutt Velo Rapide, have announced a return to profit for the 2025 financial year.<\/p>\n<p>Cycling Brands Ltd, which owns both online brands, said the year-on-year growth was down to the &#8220;strong identities, loyal customers and a reputation for service that has carried us through the downturn.&#8221; For Prendas, profitability caps\u00a0a remarkable\u00a0upturn in fortunes against prevailing market trends.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/rapha-slashes-valuation-makes-loss-316393\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&gt; Rapha slashes valuation by \u00a3102m amid \u00a315m loss and eighth straight year in the red, but insists &#8220;great work being done&#8221; to turn business around<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Prendas was started in 1996 and became renowned for the quality and variety of its retro jerseys.\u00a0However,\u00a0the brand <a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/prendas-ciclismo-scales-back-operations-due-brexit-284079\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was forced to dramatically scale back its activity<\/a>\u00a0during the Covid-19 pandemic, blaming the economic uncertainty and difficulties also caused by Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>Then boss Andy Storey &#8211; brother to Paralympic Gold medalist Barney Storey and in-law to 19-time Paralympic champion Sarah Storey &#8211; said at the time that the economic uncertainty had &#8220;hit our bottom line hard&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/prendas-ciclismo.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"970\" height=\"647\" alt=\"Prendas Ciclismo photoshoot\" title=\"Prendas Ciclismo photoshoot\"\/>Prendas Ciclismo photoshoot (credit: Prendas Cyclismo)<\/p>\n<p>Cycling Brands <a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/prendas-ciclismo-under-new-ownership-289473\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bought the Prendas brand<\/a> in October 2021 and subsequently <a href=\"https:\/\/europe.republic.com\/cycling-brands\/sections\/investor-perks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launched a successful crowdfunding appeal<\/a> for equity investment, with the intention &#8220;to restore the site to its former status as a go-to shop for Europe&#8217;s best cycling brands&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, the Prendas brand&#8217;s iconic jerseys were\u00a0revived,\u00a0bringing the iconic colours of Merckx, Anquetil and Gimondi back out onto the roads. And, after recording a loss of \u00a3220,000 in 2024, Cycling Brands has now put its finances back in the black.<\/p>\n<p>The current managing director of the business is another Paralympic cyclist, two-time World Champion and Olympic silver medalist Colin Lynch. Both Prendas and Shutt<br \/>have strong identities, loyal customers and a reputation for service that has carried us through the downturn. We are not complacent and know the wider market remains tough, but we are confident that our brands are well positioned for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/york-cycleworks-closing-316001\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&gt;\u00a0&#8220;We offer what the internet can\u2019t. But it\u2019s not enough&#8221;: Popular bike shop closing after 45 years, &#8220;can no longer compete&#8221; with online retailers<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The same cannot be said for several other British cycling brands. Rapha announced an <a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/rapha-slashes-valuation-makes-loss-316393\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eighth consecutive year of losses<\/a> in October, with new CEO Fran Millar admitting &#8220;everyone knows the things we need to change&#8221;. That same month, Scottish brand Endura <a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/endura-posts-ps47m-loss-316417\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed a loss of \u00a34.7 million<\/a>, citing &#8220;challenging market conditions&#8221;.
