Sussex is set to benefit from a major investment in active travel, with more than \u00a313 million allocated to support new cycling, walking and wheeling schemes across the county.<\/p>\n
The funding is part of a wider \u00a3133m package awarded to local authorities across the South East, drawn from a national \u00a3626m commitment to deliver safer, greener travel announced in the government\u2019s Spending Review.<\/p>\n
According to figures released by Active Travel England, West Sussex County Council will receive \u00a35.46m, while East Sussex County Council has been awarded \u00a33.38m. <\/p>\n
Brighton & Hove City Council will receive a further \u00a34.54m\u00a0to continue its work on improving cycling and walking routes across the city.<\/p>\n
All funding will be delivered over a four-year period, supporting new footpaths, upgraded cycle tracks and safer streets. <\/p>\n
Nationally, the investment is expected to create around 500 miles of new and improved active travel infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Active Travel England has also ranked local authorities based on their ability to deliver such schemes. <\/p>\n
Councils with stronger track records \u2014 including Brighton & Hove \u2014 have been awarded larger capital sums, while lower-rated authorities will receive support and training to improve.<\/p>\n
Sophie Gordon, campaigns manager at Cycling UK, welcomed the announcement, calling it a \u201cno-brainer\u201d:<\/p>\n
\u201cFor every \u00a31 spent on cycling and walking schemes in the UK, you get nearly \u00a36 back in benefits,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood added:<\/p>\n
\u201cBy backing councils with the funding and support they need, we are helping to create healthier communities, safer streets and greener local transport choices.\u201d<\/p>\n
