{"id":336958,"date":"2025-12-10T14:30:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T14:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/336958\/"},"modified":"2025-12-10T14:30:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T14:30:10","slug":"red-bull-bora-hansgrohe-pull-plane-to-take-off-in-training-camp-stunt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/336958\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe pull plane to take-off in training camp stunt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Training camps are typically a time when pro cycling teams gather themselves and prepare for the season ahead, but Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe have got theirs off to a flying start.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nine of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeradar.com\/features\/pro-bike\/worldtour-bikes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WorldTour team<\/a>, led by Tour de France podium finisher Florian Lipowitz, towed a piloted glider plane into flight in Son Bonet, Mallorca.<\/p>\n<p>The team used a 1,500m runway to accelerate to 54kph while connected to a cord and a specially designed harness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I first heard about this project, I didn\u2019t think it was possible. Launching a plane? It seemed impossible. Nothing like this has ever been done in road cycling\u201d, Lipowitz said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The riders are said to have averaged 650W for 90 seconds to get the glider, piloted by Andy Hediger, into the air.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing towed by manpower was a special feeling. I\u2019m so happy to finally combine aviation with cycling, and to see Red Bull bringing our new ideas to life,\u201d Hediger said.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Bigham, Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe\u2019s head of engineering, went as far as to say the project was \u201cgame-changing for the sport\u201d because it enabled him to use his expertise in aerodynamics and engineering.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the data and our models, we knew it would take ~500watts from each rider to launch the plane, but we did not want to stop there. Every watt more meant more altitude for the plane.
