The tagline of Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/a>\u2019s upcoming sports-drama, Marty Supreme, is \u201cDream Big.\u201d And, in case you haven\u2019t noticed, Timmy\u2019s whole shtick for the past year or so has been about his pursuit of greatness in Hollywood.<\/p>\n It pretty much all began in February when he said this at the SAG Awards<\/a> while accepting Best Actor in a Leading Role for A Complete Unknown<\/a>: \u201cI know we\u2019re in a subjective business, but the truth is\u2026I want to be one of the greats. I\u2019m inspired by the greats. I\u2019m inspired by the greats here tonight. I\u2019m as inspired by Daniel Day-Lewis<\/a>, Marlon Brando<\/a>, and Viola Davis as I am by Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, and I want to be up there.\u201d<\/p>\n At the start of the year, the speech garnered widespread praise and sparked a positive conversation about Timoth\u00e9e\u2019s “athlete-coded mentality<\/a>” towards his craft. However, as time has passed, there\u2019s been a shift, and it seems Timmy’s honesty about his work is beginning to rub people the wrong way.<\/p>\n For context, Marty Supreme comes out on Christmas Day and stars Timoth\u00e9e as Marty Mauser, a ping-pong star who goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness in his sport. Having already received a Golden Globe nomination for the movie, Timoth\u00e9e\u2019s performance is getting major Oscar buzz, and, after narrowly losing out on Best Actor<\/a> last year, it seems he\u2019s campaigning heavily to take home the win in 2026.<\/p>\n So, in a recent interview with Margaret Gardiner, Timoth\u00e9e was asked what \u201cstayed with [him]\u201d about playing Marty, to which he replied, \u201cassertiveness,\u201d \u201cconfidence,\u201d and the act of calling things as they are. With that in mind, he then took the opportunity to praise his own work as an actor.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is probably my best performance, you know, and it\u2019s been like seven, eight years that I feel like I\u2019ve been handing in really, really committed top-of-the-line performances,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s important to say it out loud because the discipline and the work ethic I\u2019m bringing to these things \u2014 I don\u2019t want people to take it for granted. I don\u2019t want to take it for granted. This is really some top-level shit.\u201d<\/p>\n Of course, there\u2019s no denying that Timothee has delivered many incredible performances. We’ve got Little Women, Lady Bird, Beautiful Boy, and the Dune franchise, and he\u2019s also received two Oscar nominations for Call Me By Your Name and A Complete Unknown.<\/p>\n But, despite the facts of the matter, Timoth\u00e9e\u2019s recent showboating hasn\u2019t gone down all that well with some movie fans, many of whom feel that he\u2019s coming across as a little arrogant.<\/p>\n Within the context of Marty’s pursuit of greatness in the film, some have even wondered if Timoth\u00e9e is playing into a character on the press tour.<\/p>\n But, amid all the chatter, there are still plenty of fans who remain fully supportive of Timoth\u00e9e’s confidence, saying that it’s “refreshing<\/a> to hear an actor talk their shit as if they\u2019re an athlete.”<\/p>\n Timoth\u00e9e’s comments went very viral yesterday, and there has since been a development: At the time of writing, the interview is no longer available on YouTube<\/a>, and a number of Reddit threads and X posts<\/a> discussing the topic have been deleted<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n It’s not entirely clear what has happened here, so we’ve reached out to Timoth\u00e9e’s team for some clarity.
