<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/tsunami-watch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tsunami watch<\/a> for much of the British Columbia coast has been upgraded to an advisory following a powerful earthquake off the coast of eastern Russia.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753129028_943_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/tsunami-advisory\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tsunami advisory<\/a> is issued when a tsunami with the potential to generate strong currents or waves dangerous to those in or very near the water is imminent, expected or occurring,\u201d the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Centre describes on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsunami.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">website<\/a>. \u201cThe threat may continue for several hours after initial arrival, but significant inundation is not expected for areas under an advisory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The now recorded magnitude 8.8 quake struck 136 kilometres southeast of Russia\u2019s Kamchatka Peninsula shortly before 4:30 p.m. PST on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-figure__image\" alt=\"A map showing areas covered by a here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s meteorological agency issued a tsunami alert for the country\u2019s Pacific coast warning of a tsunami of up to three metres, while a tsunami warning was also extended to Hawaii, detailing the potential to cause damage along the coastlines of all the Hawaiian islands.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: give people time to prepare to take action.<\/p>\n<p>They are issued when the level of danger posed by a potential tsunami is not yet known.<\/p>\n<p>People who live in the affected zones are urged to get out of the ocean and away from beaches and harbours, to stay alert for further updates from local authorities and to minimize the use of phone lines.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below
