Beijing and Washington will continue to circle each other warily in 2026 even as China\u2019s leadership struggles to balance economic growth against its control fixation, according to a report on next year\u2019s outlook for China released on Wednesday by the Asia Society.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs we look towards 2026, the story is not one of rises or triumph. It\u2019s not black or white,\u201d said Lizzi Lee, a fellow at the Society\u2019s Centre for China Analysis and one of the report\u2019s co-authors. \u201cIt is a story of transitions, trade-offs and tensions.\u201d<\/p>\n
But any stability ahead is \u201crooted not in accommodation but in a shared recognition of each side\u2019s capacity to inflict significant economic harm on the other\u201d, said the report. \u201cBoth sides are racing to eliminate the other\u2019s strategic chokepoints.\u201d<\/p>\n
Even as Washington works overtime<\/a> to circumvent China\u2019s dominant position<\/a> in rare earth minerals, Beijing is determined to break the US lock on the most advanced semiconductors.
