{"id":338926,"date":"2025-12-11T20:41:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-11T20:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/338926\/"},"modified":"2025-12-11T20:41:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-11T20:41:16","slug":"n-b-woman-says-father-found-with-black-eye-bruises-after-hospital-falls-new-brunswick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/338926\/","title":{"rendered":"N.B. woman says father found with \u2018black eye,\u2019 bruises after hospital falls &#8211; New Brunswick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An 86-year-old man with dementia went to a New Brunswick hospital for pneumonia but ended up with bruises and other injuries, his family says.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765485674_689_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>His family believes the injuries came from hospital falls and could have been prevented with more resources to support patients and staff as they wait for a nursing home placement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re going in, you\u2019re seeing your father with a black eye, and all covered in bruises,\u201d said Lisa Weir, whose father Winston Cossaboom is at Saint John Regional Hospital while waiting for a long-term care bed placement.<\/p>\n<p>For more than three decades, Cossaboom served his community working with the Saint John Police Force. Now it\u2019s his turn for care, and his family believes the health-care system is coming up short in fulfilling his needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s gone into the hospital with pneumonia and now has more injuries from being in the hospital,\u201d Weir said.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Cossaboom joined the wait-list in July for an in-home care assessment, which requires a social worker.<\/p>\n<p>After getting pneumonia in October, and with his dementia worsening, Cossaboom was admitted to the Saint John Regional Hospital, where he remains today.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/healthiq.jpg\" alt=\"Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet weekly health news<\/p>\n<p>Receive the latest medical news and health information delivered to you every Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>A care home is now his only option, but six months after registering, the family still hasn\u2019t seen the social worker to make that happen.<\/p>\n<p>With Cossaboom now waiting in hospital, things are continuing to spiral.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Early one morning this month, Weir says her mother received a phone call they never expected from the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found your husband on the floor and we aren\u2019t sure how long he had been there,\u201d Weir recalled about what the hospital told her mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are doing the very best they can but let\u2019s at least give them some equipment that would help,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Cossaboom is one of roughly 300 acute long-term care patients in a hospital run by Horizon Health Network who are waiting for a nursing home placement.<\/p>\n<p>Horizon Health Network has spoken out against these conditions already this year.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Greg Doiron, VP of clinical operations at Horizon Health, said they \u201cunderstand the frustration families experience when loved ones required extended hospital stays while waiting for long-term care placement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\tTrending Now\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11572110\/albert-recall-petition-danielle-smith\/\" class=\"c-posts__inner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-posts__thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765485676_704_52963021384_f597bdd6b6_k.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"336\" height=\"224\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tDanielle Smith becomes first Alberta premier in 90 years to face citizen recall\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11571881\/us-travel-esta-social-media-family-history\/\" class=\"c-posts__inner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-posts__thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765485676_684_1dd356d57fe2713fbe33e823b1d133c19207b86faa499bfe153e1e0d82211a95.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"336\" height=\"224\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tVisiting U.S.? Here\u2019s who may need to share social media, family details\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHospitals are designed and resourced to provide acute care, and these patients deserve to be cared for in an environment that best meets their needs,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHorizon continues to be challenged with nearly 40% of our acute care beds being occupied by patients waiting for placement in long term care facilities. \u00a0Hospitals are not designed for that type of care.
