The Blue Jays landed\u00a0Seranthony Dom\u00ednguez<\/a> in a trade with the Orioles on Tuesday afternoon. That could be one of multiple bullpen pickups for Toronto. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com<\/a> suggested the Jays remain in the mix for\u00a0Ryan Helsley<\/a>. More generally, Mitch Bannon and Will Sammon of The Athletic<\/a> report that Toronto would like to add another high-leverage piece as well as a swingman.<\/p>\n

Potentially available late-game arms aside from Helsley include David Bednar<\/a>,\u00a0Dennis Santana<\/a>,\u00a0Jhoan Dur\u00e1n<\/a>,\u00a0Griffin Jax<\/a>, Phil Maton<\/a>, Anthony Bender<\/a> and Pierce Johnson<\/a>. Washington\u2019s\u00a0Michael Soroka<\/a>, the White Sox\u2019\u00a0Adrian Houser<\/a> and\u00a0Tyler Alexander<\/a>, old friend Steven Matz<\/a> and the A\u2019s Sean Newcomb<\/a> all have experience working as starters or in multi-inning relief. Players like Cal Quantrill<\/a>, Austin Gomber<\/a> and\u00a0Andrew Heaney<\/a> have mostly worked as starting pitchers throughout their careers. They\u2019re impending free agents and could get squeezed into a long relief role somewhere if they\u2019re dealt to a contender.<\/p>\n

Toronto has a late-inning group of Jeff Hoffman<\/a>, Dom\u00ednguez,\u00a0Yariel Rodr\u00edguez<\/a>,\u00a0Brendon Little<\/a> and\u00a0Braydon Fisher<\/a>. Righties\u00a0Nick Sandlin<\/a> and\u00a0Yimi Garc\u00eda<\/a> are on the 15-day injured list with uncertain return timelines. Hoffman, Dom\u00ednguez and middle reliever\u00a0Tommy Nance<\/a> are the only pitchers in the current bullpen with even two years of MLB service. Rodr\u00edguez, Fisher and Little have pitched well this year but don\u2019t have any experience shouldering significant innings down the stretch in a pennant race.<\/p>\n

A swingman would provide some insurance at the back of the rotation. All five of their starters are at least 30 years old. Max Scherzer\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0injury history is a concern.\u00a0Eric Lauer<\/a> has been great and deserves to hold his rotation spot, but he was a fringe MLB roster player just a few months ago.
