An “isolated outbreak” of scabies has been confirmed at Noble’s Hospital by the Isle of Man’s healthcare provider.<\/p>\n
The itchy skin condition is caused by a mite which burrows under the skin to lay eggs. Highly infectious, scabies can be spread through close physical contact, bedding and clothing.<\/p>\n
Manx Care said: “All necessary precautions and procedures are being followed to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our patients and to protect our colleagues.”<\/p>\n
The situation is being “closely monitored” and there is “no wider risk to the public”, said a spokesperson.<\/p>\n
‘Uncomfortable’<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Karsons Pharmacy has issued advice amid an “increase in scabies cases across the island” over the past 12 months.<\/p>\n
It said symptoms included persistent itching – particularly at night – as well as a red, bumpy rash, thin lines or burrows on the skin on the wrists, fingers, elbows or waistline.<\/p>\n
Although scabies is “uncomfortable”, it is “fully treatable”.<\/p>\n
The condition should be treated quickly to stop it spreading, the NHS advises.<\/p>\n
People should go to their GP if they are under two months old, pregnant or breastfeeding.<\/p>\n
People should also seek medical help if symptoms worsen or do not improve.<\/p>\n
The same advice applies if there are signs of infection such as pain, spreading redness, discharge or fever.<\/p>\n
