Hours later, when she was set to give him a ride home from basketball practice, he bashfully told her that his entire team had received text messages about her that day \u2014 \u201cand they were all bad.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk100033b6pndonvq10@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Recounting the moment to CNN shortly after she joined 20 other Republican state senators in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/11\/politics\/indiana-senate-republicans-redistricting-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rejecting President Donald Trump\u2019s redistricting push<\/a>, Leising said she laughed the moment off with her grandson \u2014 but that it ultimately led to her opposing the president.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk100043b6p6zyiy0uf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBoy, when I got home that night, that\u2019s when I decided,\u201d said Leising, a 76-year-old grandmother of eight, first elected to the Senate in 1988. \u201cI was angry. So the next day, I said, \u2018I\u2019ve got to talk about this.\u2019 Because this is over the top. This shouldn\u2019t be the way it was.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk100053b6p46m4olym@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBut that was the beginning,\u201d she added. \u201cIt only got worse from there.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk100063b6ps2c0nufn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It was clear on Thursday that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/02\/politics\/indiana-redistricting-trump-gop\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pressure campaign waged<\/a> by the White House and its allies had backfired. A state that Trump won by nearly 20 points in 2024 gave him a massive political black eye, rejecting a push to create two more GOP-friendly US House seats that could have helped Republicans retain the House majority in next year\u2019s midterms.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk100073b6pk16l9ini@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Several Republican senators noted on Thursday that constituents opposed a mid-decade redrawing of US House maps and that they questioned the wisdom or the precedent of joining the national redistricting battle. But a number of Republicans, including people who voted for the president three elections in a row, also gave deeply personal reasons over the last several weeks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk100083b6ptdirfa1w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sen. Mike Bohacek has a daughter with Down syndrome. He was offended by Trump\u2019s use of a slur for people with disabilities, in a Truth Social post deriding Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and said that Trump\u2019s \u201cchoices of words have consequences.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk100093b6pe1p7xky4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sen. Greg Walker, who represents former Vice President Mike Pence\u2019s hometown of Columbus, said he was among the senators <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/21\/politics\/indiana-governor-lawmakers-swatted-threatened-redistricting\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">targeted by swatting attempts<\/a> in the weeks leading up to Thursday\u2019s vote. While law enforcement has not publicly linked the swatting or other threats to a political motive, Walker said he felt voting yes would reward wrongdoing and set a dangerous precedent.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk1000a3b6pu2vvz8a4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sen. Greg Goode, whose town hall in Terre Haute this fall revealed massive public opposition to mid-decade redistricting, said the new maps would splinter communities with similar interests. He also criticized \u201cover-the-top pressure from inside the Statehouse and outside,\u201d as well as \u201cthreats of violence, acts of violence.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk1000b3b6p7bqn3rte@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhether we realize it or not, whether we accept it or not, the forces that define this vitriolic political affairs in places outside of Indiana have been gradually and now very blatantly infiltrated the political affairs in Indiana,\u201d he said in a speech before the vote.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/c-gettyimages-2250706322.jpg\" alt=\"The final vote results displayed at the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Thursday.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk1000c3b6p3qmr0hle@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump posted repeatedly on social media about Indiana, naming individual senators and threatening primary challengers against anyone who voted no, while Vice President JD Vance went twice to Indiana to meet with lawmakers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk1000d3b6p8nhonznc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump\u2019s political allies tried to turn Indiana\u2019s vote into a loyalty test, mobilizing supporters to pressure holdout Republicans. The Club for Growth and a new group led by a handful of Trump presidential campaign veterans aired ads threatening to oust incumbent senators who voted against redistricting. Turning Point USA, the group founded by Charlie Kirk, vowed to back those primary challenges and hosted a small rally at the Indiana Statehouse last week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk1000e3b6p6m2kqhh7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Much of Trump\u2019s ire was focused on Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray, the Martinsville Republican who had long insisted the Senate didn\u2019t have enough votes to pass new maps. Bray announced after the vote failed that under Indiana Senate rules, the chamber can\u2019t take up the maps again during its 2026 session.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk1000f3b6pxzuallkd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Leising said she had voted for Trump three times. But she was unhappy with the president\u2019s efforts to pressure Indiana into scrapping and replacing its congressional maps as part of a nationwide arms race ahead of next year\u2019s midterm elections.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk1000g3b6p10oseui2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI wish that President Trump would change his tone. He needs to be more positive about what he needs to address for \u201927 and \u201928. Why does he need to have a Republican majority in \u201927 and \u201928? What is he going to do next?\u201d Leising said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk1000h3b6pqo0jyiyf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She also said redistricting advocates\u2019 efforts ultimately backfired, hardening opposition in the Senate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk1000i3b6pycqd2dpi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t change minds by being mean. And the efforts were mean-spirited from the get-go,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you were wanting to change votes, you would probably try to explain why we should be doing this, in a positive way. That never happened, so, you know, I think they get what they get.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk1000j3b6pfdpvger6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sen. Sue Glick, a Republican who took office in 2010, echoed Leising\u2019s comments, citing the violent threats many senators faced.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk1000k3b6p997gv43f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHoosiers are a hardy lot, and they don\u2019t like to be threatened. They don\u2019t like to be intimidated. They don\u2019t like to be bullied in any fashion. And I think a lot of them responded with, \u2018That isn\u2019t going to work,\u2019\u201d Glick said. \u201cAnd it didn\u2019t.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk1000l3b6pc1gh55q6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Glick said she\u2019d spoken with both Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson about redistricting, and that both had been pleasant.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk1000m3b6prww777vp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But, Glick said, \u201cWe don\u2019t have to take orders from any other level of government or any other person in government. We\u2019ll listen to cogent arguments about what\u2019s going on. But I don\u2019t think it swayed people to vote against their conscience.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk1000n3b6pilb3uisp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Leising, Glick and other Senate Republicans insisted Bray\u2019s Senate leadership post is safe. And they laughed off the talk of primary challenges against them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj23pwk1000o3b6p4no9fp4m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn Indiana, we\u2019re not going to be intimidated,\u201d Leising said. \u201cWe\u2019re strong people.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Indianapolis \u00a0\u2014\u00a0 Jean Leising spoke at a breakfast this fall at her 8th grade grandson\u2019s school.
