Robin Roberts is giving back.<\/p>\n
The \u201cGood Morning America\u201d anchor, 64, has been temporarily absent from the show\u2019s broadcast for good reason.<\/p>\n
Instead of spending her days in the studio, Roberts took a trip with her wife, Amber Laign, to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The couple traveled to Kigali, Rwanda, to do some good.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re in #Rwanda as guests of @inmuwetrust_ & @giantsofafrica celebrating young basketball players across Africa,\u201d the journalist captioned her Sunday Instagram post<\/a>. \u201cEvery last Saturday in the month in Rwanda is a national day of service.\u201d<\/p>\n Roberts added, \u201cWonderful way for the two of us to celebrate 20 years as a couple \u2026 it certainly has been an adventure! \ud83d\udc95#goafestival.\u201d<\/p>\n Robin Roberts spends time in Rwanda with her wife. Instagram\/robinrobertsgma<\/p>\n The pair, who met\u00a0on a blind date in 2005, officially tied the knot in 2023.<\/a><\/p>\n Laign, meanwhile, shared\u00a0her own social media post<\/a> about their recent adventure.<\/p>\n Alongside a video of the service group dancing and chanting, the former massage therapist wrote, \u201c20 Years, 20 Countries, One Incredible Journey \u2764\ufe0f\ud83c\udf0d.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cRobin and I celebrated our 20-year anniversary in a way we\u2019ll never forget \u2014 in Rwanda, with Giants of Africa, surrounded by the energy, joy, and spirit of youth from 20 African countries,\u201d Laign continued.<\/p>\n Their vacation solidified what is most important in this world.<\/p>\n \u201cFrom dancing to community service that touched our hearts, this experience reminded us what truly matters: connection, purpose, and giving back. We\u2019re beyond grateful to have shared this milestone in such a powerful and uplifting way. Never a dull moment with this one.\u201d<\/p>\n This trip to Rwanda was a long time coming for the spouses. Roberts and Laign first discussed their anniversary plans in June while speaking to People<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re [actually going] to Rwanda,\u201d the reporter said. \u201cBecause we wanted to celebrate that way, because our time together has been an adventure. News<\/a>, adding, \u201cCommunication, keeping it fresh, trust\u2014all the good pillars.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cTrust is very, very big,\u201d Roberts added. \u201cWe\u2019ve had peaks and valleys\u2014mainly majority peaks, but there have been some valleys.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cOnce we learned to not look at each other through the lens of our childhood, that was a real breakthrough for us,\u201d she explained. \u201cIt was a real understanding [of] having different paths to get here.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Amber Laign and Robin Roberts celebrate Roberts\u2019 20th \u201cGMA\u201d anniversary. GC Images<\/p>\n Roberts also acknowledged their decadeslong commitment, which is no small feat.<\/p>\n \u201cI mean, 20 years,\u201d she gushed. \u201cSomething\u2019s got to be working.\u201d<\/p>\n Laign lives in her home in Connecticut, while Roberts resides in her New York City apartment.<\/p>\n Roberts first mentioned their living arrangements in her 2014 memoir, \u201cEverybody\u2019s Got Something<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Robin Roberts and Amber Laign smile for a selfie. robinrobertsgma\/Instagram<\/p>\n She penned, \u201cAmber and I have been a loving couple for almost ten years now, but we choose not to live together. Maybe that\u2019s why we\u2019ve lasted almost a decade!\u201d<\/p>\n Despite having her own abode, Laign couldn\u2019t be happier with the partner she chose. <\/p>\n \u201c15 years ago I met you for drinks on a blind date that both you and I tried to cancel \u2026 twice,\u201d she shared in a 2020 Instagram<\/a>\u00a0anniversary post. \u201cYour grace caught my eye right away and the ease of the evening continued to flow through dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n Robin Roberts and Amber Laign. robinrobertsgma\/Instagram<\/p>\n After that, there were no more cancellations to be had.<\/p>\n \u201cWe had a second date soon after and I couldn\u2019t believe how at ease I was with you as we shared each other\u2019s lives sipping lychee and apple martinis,\u201d she continued. \u201cYou left for Tahiti the following day and during that time apart I grew this feeling inside of me that still is very present today \u2026 butterflies.\u201d<\/p>\n Years later, Roberts took the leap to make things official.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m hesitating because I haven\u2019t said it out loud yet \u2026 I\u2019m saying \u2018yes\u2019 to marriage,\u201d she shared on \u201cGMA\u201d in 2023. \u201cWe\u2019re getting married this year.\u201d<\/p>\n Referencing\u00a0Laign\u2019s previous breast cancer battle, of which Roberts is a survivor too<\/a>, she added, \u201cIt was something we had talked about, but we had put it off.
