{"id":342353,"date":"2025-12-13T10:06:12","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T10:06:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/342353\/"},"modified":"2025-12-13T10:06:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T10:06:12","slug":"microsoft-will-protect-canada-digital-sovereignty-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/342353\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft will protect Canada digital sovereignty: president"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Microsoft vice-chair and president Brad Smith insists his company can protect digital sovereignty in Canada, regardless of who is leading the U.S. government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">This week, Microsoft announced it will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/article\/microsoft-to-invest-more-than-75-billion-in-canada-to-boost-ai-infrastructure\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">invest $7.5 billion in Canada<\/a> over the next two years as part of a data-centre expansion, bringing its total investment in this country to $19 billion between 2023 and 2027. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">But amid trade and geopolitical tensions under U.S. President Donald Trump, some Canadian companies are looking to reduce their reliance on American tech companies and are pushing for more digital sovereignty, referring to a country\u2019s ability to exercise control over its own data and the digital infrastructure managing it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/C3Y3Z6X6CJFTFM6YKRWULWG6KI.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Microsoft Brad Smith Microsoft CEO Brad Smith delivers his speech at the French Microsoft headquarters in Issy-les-Moulineaux, outside Paris, Monday, May 13, 2024. (AP Photo\/Thibault Camus, Pool) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In an interview with CTV Question Period airing Sunday, Smith told host Vassy Kapelos that \u201cno country can defend its digital sovereignty if it cannot defend its digital borders,\u201d later adding that Microsoft defends Canada\u2019s digital border \u201cevery day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe have said that if the U.S. government seeks data from a Canadian customer, we will stand up to defend that,\u201d Smtih said. \u201cIf there\u2019s a legal basis, and there typically is, we\u2019ll go to court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIf the continuity of our services in Canada is ever threatened by an executive order \u2026 If it were ever to come to pass in Canada, that there would be some risk of that, we wouldn\u2019t hesitate to speak up, to stand up, to go to court to defend our right to serve our customers here in Canada,\u201d he later added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Smith was in Ottawa on Tuesday for his company\u2019s announcement, during which he had a private meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Back in September, Carney announced his intent to build a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/article\/ottawa-is-talking-about-building-a-sovereign-cloud-but-what-does-that-even-mean\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian sovereign cloud<\/a>\u201d through the new Major Projects Office as part of the country\u2019s nation-building agenda.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A sovereign cloud is a computing environment companies use to run services that can be set up to comply with a specific country\u2019s law or core values.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/MR5SKHC7KVIMJHF7HXQH63PFJM.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Prime Minister Mark Carney announces five major projects as part of his plan for Canada to navigate changing trade relationships in Edmonton on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS\/Amber Bracken <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Since 2022, Canada and the U.S. have been negotiating an agreement through the U.S. Cloud Act, which allows the U.S. government to ask American companies that have offices or infrastructure in other countries to hand over data if required by the law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">But according to a recent Canadian government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/government\/system\/digital-government\/digital-government-innovations\/cloud-services\/digital-sovereignty\/gc-white-paper-data-sovereignty-public-cloud.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/government\/system\/digital-government\/digital-government-innovations\/cloud-services\/digital-sovereignty\/gc-white-paper-data-sovereignty-public-cloud.html\">white paper on digital sovereignty<\/a>, the federal government can\u2019t maintain full control of its data if its data storage supplier is subject to the laws of another country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Asked about the viability of his pledge to protect Canadian data, given the Trump administration\u2019s pattern of dismissing the law, Smith said the company also relies on its \u201cdiplomatic relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe rely on the ability to turn to people in different governments and ask them to come together. THE CANADIAN PRESS\/Christopher Katsarov <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Speaking to Kapelos, Smith stressed the importance for Microsoft to look outwards, even as the Trump administration puts pressure on companies to stay and maintain investments in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI do believe (the U.S. government) understands that this is fundamental to our business,\u201d he said, adding that \u201clife has lots of nuance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">While making its latest <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2025\/12\/09\/microsoft-deepens-its-commitment-to-canada-with-landmark-19b-ai-investment\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">investment announcement in Canada<\/a>, Smith emphasized that Canada can \u201ccount on\u201d Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">When asked why he felt the need to highlight that point, Smith acknowledged the changing relationships between the U.S. and other countries, including Canada, but said the company is not going anywhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe have been here for more than 40 years. Our goal is to be here 40 years from now. We create the technology on which the economy relies. People have to be able to depend on us.
