This condition occurs when excessive vitamin D builds up in the body, causing dangerously high <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/calcium-blood-test-8655906\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">calcium levels<\/a> (hypercalcemia).\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Vitamin D toxicity is rare and is almost always caused by taking excessively high doses of supplements, not from food or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/how-much-sun-for-vitamin-d-11754641\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sun exposure<\/a>. The body naturally regulates how much vitamin D it makes from the sun, and most food sources don\u2019t contain enough vitamin D to become an issue, even if consumed in large portions.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cThere are rare genetic causes of vitamin D toxicity, but I have never seen a case of vitamin D toxicity linked to foods naturally rich in vitamin D. Vitamin D toxicity is almost always from consuming too many vitamin D supplements,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/doctors\/internal-medicine\/ca\/tustin\/neil-patel-1235767716\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neil Patel, MD<\/a>, internal medicine specialist with Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Orange County, California, told Health.<\/p>\n<p>  The Safe Upper Limit  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_29-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has set a tolerable upper intake level (the highest daily dose unlikely to cause adverse effects) for vitamin D at 4,000 IU (100 micrograms) per day.<\/p>\n<p>Research shows that vitamin D toxicity can occur with prolonged daily intake above 10,000 IU, though the exact threshold can vary between individuals.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_32-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Vitamin D toxicity is preventable and starts with smart supplement habits.\u00a0Here\u2019s how to stay safe:\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/vitamin-d-test-8712026\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Know your vitamin D level<\/a>: The only way to know if your vitamin D levels are high or low is to have your blood levels checked.\u00a0\u201cIf you are taking a high dose of vitamin D, regular blood tests are a simple way to monitor your levels,\u201d said Barlow. Recommendations for optimal blood levels of vitamin D vary, but usually fall between 40\u201370 ng\/mL.<br \/>\nStick to the safe upper limit: Although people with low vitamin D levels sometimes need higher doses, most healthy adults should keep supplemental vitamin D to 4,000 IU daily unless directed otherwise by a healthcare provider.<br \/>\nCheck your labels: Patel recommended being careful when taking multiple supplements and noting how much vitamin D is in each. \u201cIt\u2019s important that patients know what dosage of vitamin D they are getting from their multivitamin(s) or supplement(s),\u201d he said.<br \/>\nWork with a professional:\u00a0If you need supplemental vitamin D, it\u2019s best to work with a qualified healthcare provider and follow their recommendations for safe and appropriate dosing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Vitamin D plays essential roles in your body, such as regulating immune function, inflammation, and mood.
