The crowds are gone, the air is crisp, and the game feels honest again. Beginning Saturday morning, the AmateurGolf.com 2025 Winter Invitational presented by Callaway Golf embraces that reality as it tees off at San Juan Oaks Golf Club for the first time.

Set in the oak-lined foothills near Hollister, San Juan Oaks enters the spotlight as the Invitational’s new home following a venue shift from Corica Park. The move brings a distinct change in character—less urban, more strategic, and ideally suited for a two-day winter championship built around pace, shot-making, and competitive balance.

A New Venue, Sharpened for Competition

Originally designed by Fred Couples and Gene Bates, San Juan Oaks has long been admired for its natural routing and variety of approach shots. A comprehensive modernization completed in late 2024 refined those strengths without erasing the course’s original identity.

The renovation emphasized strategic restraint: fewer bunkers, clearer angles, improved turf consistency, and infrastructure upgrades that allow the course to play firm and fair even in December conditions. Greens were rebuilt for smoother roll rather than raw speed, encouraging confident putting and rewarding players who control trajectory and distance.

For this week’s field, that translates into a course that asks thoughtful questions rather than issuing blunt demands. Precision off the tee matters. Approaches must be played to the correct side. And around the greens, creativity remains an asset—especially as winter lies invite imagination.

Format & Pace: Built for Winter Golf

The Winter Invitational is designed to respect both competition and calendar. The event is contested over 36 holes, with threesomes off split tees and an intentional pace-of-play standard targeting approximately 4.5 hours per round.

That structure allows the focus to remain where it belongs—on scoring swings, leaderboard movement, and the subtleties that emerge over two rounds rather than survival over four days.

Multiple gross divisions ensure meaningful competition throughout the field, including:

ChampionshipSenior (with Super Senior sub-division)Mid-Am (with sub-division)Women (adjusted tees)Limited-field Net division

With cooler air and slightly heavier playing conditions expected, patience and course management should play as large a role as raw power.

What to Watch This WeekendFirst impressions at San Juan Oaks. This marks the Invitational’s debut at the venue, and early feedback—particularly on how the renovated greens and bunkering influence scoring—will help define the course’s long-term role in the Winter Series.Winter scoring momentum. December leaderboards can shift quickly. One disciplined round often proves more valuable than a flashy stretch of birdies.Division depth. With multiple championships in play, expect parallel storylines to develop across age groups and formats as the weekend unfolds.Efficiency under pressure. With pace of play built into the event’s DNA, players who stay committed to routine and rhythm tend to separate late. Why the Winter Invitational Fits Here

San Juan Oaks offers something increasingly rare: a tournament-ready course that cooperates with winter golf rather than fighting it. Firm but fair surfaces, modern infrastructure, and a routing that rewards decision-making make it an ideal stage for a season-ending championship.

For AmateurGolf.com, the pairing feels intentional. For players, it’s a chance to finish the year with purpose—and to start December with something meaningful on the line.

Two days. One restored California classic. And a leaderboard that will take shape shot by shot.

Event SnapshotDates: December 13–14, 2025Venue: San Juan Oaks Golf Club (Hollister, CA)Presented by: Callaway GolfFormat: 36 holes, gross competition (limited Net division)Field: Threesomes, split teesPace Standard: ~4.5 hours per round

Live Scoring: Golf Genius Leaderboard
