Their mission was in support of on-going counter-ISIS \/ counter-terrorism operations in the region,\u201d Parnell wrote, adding that the names of those killed were being withheld until next of kin are notified.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj4jaged000n3b6pstbgcowv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said the attacker was killed by partner forces.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj4jai2x000q3b6p3eiajg8p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLet it be known, if you target Americans \u2014 anywhere in the world \u2014 you will spend the rest of your brief, anxious life knowing the United States will hunt you, find you, and ruthlessly kill you,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/secwar\/status\/1999882265355227392?s=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote<\/a> on X.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj4j93df000k3b6pgail71wl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US soldiers came under fire during a joint patrol with Syrian forces in central Syria, according to the official national news agency SANA.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj4jbdor000t3b6phjr7x80z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Traffic on the highway between Deir Ezzor and Damascus was halted in connection with the incident, and video showed US combat aircraft overhead.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmj4jdjyt000y3b6pqtz4mxi8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cU.S. helicopters intervened to evacuate the wounded to the al-Tanf base following the shooting incident,\u201d SANA reported.
