""Sorry The latest public clash between Elon Musk and California Governor Gavin Newsom was political on the surface. But at its centre sat something far more personal: Musk’s estranged transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO lashed out after Newsom’s office publicly acknowledged that Musk’s daughter “hates” him, a blunt response that followed a viral clip of the governor reaffirming his pro-trans stance. The remark was shared by America PAC, a political action committee founded by Musk to support conservative causes. When the PAC appeared to mock Newsom’s position, the governor’s press office responded sharply: “Correct. We’re sorry your daughter hates you, Elon.”

That comment triggered an unusually personal reaction from Musk, who responded by deadnaming his daughter(again) and invoking language that has since drawn widespread criticism.Musk’s response and the language that followed“I assume you’re referring to my son, Xavier, who has a tragic mental illness caused by the evil woke mind virus you push on vulnerable children,” Musk wrote early Friday. I love Xavier very much and hope he recovers. My daughters are Azure, Exa (she goes by Y) and Arcadia, and they do indeed love me very much.”The post continued Musk’s long-standing refusal to recognise Vivian’s gender identity, as well as his repeated use of the term “woke mind virus” to describe trans-affirming care and ideology. He has previously used the same phrase in interviews, social media posts, and public speeches.Following the exchange, Musk reposted content from anti-trans accounts, resurfaced older videos of himself discussing the “woke mind virus,” reshared a tweet by J.K. Rowling, and pinned a post reading: “If you have a womb, you are a woman. Otherwise, you are not.”Vivian Wilson’s responseVivian Jenna Wilson did not address her father directly. Instead, she posted a series of pointed messages on Threads, shortly before Musk replied to Newsom’s office.“If you’re gonna talk shit about me, then do it directly because if you don’t then I will🥰,” she wrote. She followed that with: “My bandwidth for cowardly men grows thinner with each passing day.”Soon after, she updated her Instagram and Threads bio to read: “tragic mental illness caused by the evil woke mind virus”, a clear reference to Musk’s words, repurposed with biting irony.Who is Vivian Jenna Wilson?Vivian Jenna Wilson is the daughter of Elon Musk and Canadian author Justine Musk (née Wilson). She was born on April 15, 2004, alongside her twin brother, Griffin. Her birth came after a devastating loss for the couple. Their first child, Nevada Alexander, died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) at just 10 weeks old in 2002.Wilson is the eldest of Musk’s purported 14 children, though she herself has said she does not know the exact number. The public first became aware of her in 2022, when court documents revealed her decision to legally change her name and sever ties with her father’s surname following her gender transition. In contrast to her relationship with Musk, Wilson has spoken warmly and openly about her mother.“She is a published writer of supernatural romance fiction, which is where I get all my Vivian-isms, of being cringe and chronically online,” Wilson told NBC News.“When I came out to her … she pretended to be slightly surprised for 30 seconds and then was like, ‘Yeah, honey. Okay.’”Estrangement from Elon MuskAccording to Wilson, Musk was largely absent from her life even before she came out as trans. In an NBC interview last year, she said he had not been involved for months at the time she sought gender-affirming care.“No, he was not as supportive as my mom,” she recalled. “First of all, I had not talked to him in months—in months—so I had to get f**king parental consent to get testosterone blockers and [hormone replacement therapy].”She said Musk cut her off financially and “in every other way” in 2020, the same year she came out.Musk, the richest man in the world—has continued to publicly misgender and deadname her since.“I don’t give a f**k about him. I really don’t,” Wilson said.“It’s annoying that people associate me with him. I just don’t have any room to care anymore.”After legally changing her name from Xavier(the name Musk still uses) to Wilson made it clear she no longer wished to be associated with her father’s identity or legacy. Instead, she focused on building a life on her own terms. Before entering the fashion world, she was studying languages in Tokyo. In addition to English, she speaks French, Spanish, and Japanese. This year, Wilson made her modelling debut, marking a new chapter in her public life. Wilson walked her first major runway this season at the Spring/Summer 2026 ready-to-wear show for jewelry and accessories brand Alexis Bittar. The appearance marked her formal entry into the modelling industry. She has since walked several runways, including: Prabal Gurung Spring/Summer 2026, and Chrishabana.

The latest public clash between Elon Musk and California Governor Gavin Newsom was political on the surface.
