{"id":345563,"date":"2025-12-14T22:55:18","date_gmt":"2025-12-14T22:55:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/345563\/"},"modified":"2025-12-14T22:55:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-14T22:55:18","slug":"photos-quinte-news-tours-picton-terminals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/345563\/","title":{"rendered":"PHOTOS: Quinte News tours Picton Terminals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The site of a new fresh water port in Prince Edward County has certainly been in the news over the last several years.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, earlier this week at the meeting of municipal council, members voted in favour of a motion asking staff to investigate quarrying on a portion of the port\u2019s property.<\/p>\n<p>Picton Terminal\u2019s owners say the only quarrying being done is necessary for the development of the port itself and no quarrying has happened on the portion of the property zoned RU1 (rural).<\/p>\n<p>MORE BELOW<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quintenews.com\/?attachment_id=372728\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-372728 nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-372728\" class=\"size-full wp-image-372728\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/picton-terminals-18.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-372728\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Massive equipment is required to move around salt inside a storage facility (Photo: Tim Durkin\/ Quinte News)<\/p>\n<p>Storage of materials happens at the port currently, including road salt, steel, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Meantime, there are massive eight silos now on site, which will be able to store 32,000 metric tons of crops.<\/p>\n<p>The silos are part of a project, operated by agribusiness Parrish &amp; Heimbecker.<\/p>\n<p>MORE BELOW<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quintenews.com\/?attachment_id=372688\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-372688 nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-372688\" class=\"size-full wp-image-372688\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ph-nov-2025-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Parrish and Heimbecker silos along Lake Ontario at Picton Terminals\" width=\"4000\" height=\"2542\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-372688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Parrish and Heimbecker \u2013 Picton Terminals<\/p>\n<p>The silos are large enough to fill an entire lake freighter, taking the product to other Canadian and global markets.<\/p>\n<p>Local farmer Jeff Harrison is the Chair of the Grain Farmers of Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>He says this port will help Ontario feed the world, help farmers financially, while keeping trucks of the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFarmers in middle eastern Ontario generally have to travel a long ways to take their grain to market.\u00a0 End users are not always in close proximity.\u00a0 Being able to service export markets as close as Picton, will help put money back in farmers pockets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John Grech is the Director of Marine Development and Commercial Development with Picton Terminals.<\/p>\n<p>He pushed back on the notion of the port having a negative environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this product had to make it\u2019s way to either Hamilton or Montreal, in order to get onto a water born vessel, it would add approximately four million kilometres onto the 401 on an annual basis.\u00a0 So you can imagine what the green house emissions\u00a0effects that would be, the impact it is to the infrastructure of the highways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During this weeks council meeting, Councillor Bill Roberts spoke spoke about the reality of the times in Canada and the economic importance of the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada needs deep water port infrastructure, to help create and sustain reliable supply chains and new markets, in order to generate jobs and attract investments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MORE BELOW<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quintenews.com\/?attachment_id=372727\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-372727 nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-372727\" class=\"size-full wp-image-372727\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/picton-terminals-17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-372727\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A covered storage facility for road salt (Photo: Tim Durkin\/ Quinte News)<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Below is a statement from the Grain Farmers of Ontairo<\/p>\n<p>Grain Farmers of Ontario, the provinces largest commodity organization (28,000 barley, corn, soybean, oat, and wheat farmers), is encouraged to see work progressing on the new grain facility at Picton Terminals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For eastern Ontario farmers, even a modest improvement in how corn, wheat and soybeans move through the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway system can make a real difference. It helps get grain where it needs to go, and it helps do so in a way that is more predictable.<\/p>\n<p>This investment in critical infrastructure supports the work farmers do. \u201cFarmers rely on infrastructure that is dependable,\u201d says Jeff Harrison, Chair of Grain Farmers of Ontario. \u201cThis project supports the movement of essential goods and strengthens the system we depend on to get Ontario grain to markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ontario\u2019s supply chain is broader than grain alone. It includes other commodities that move through marine infrastructure and that, in a practical sense, support businesses, services and households across the province. When those sectors function together in a steady, reliable way, it strengthens the system that keeps food and essential goods moving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">You can see photos Quinte
