{"id":345876,"date":"2025-12-15T02:37:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T02:37:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/345876\/"},"modified":"2025-12-15T02:37:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T02:37:10","slug":"we-do-not-give-in-to-terror-canadians-voice-support-for-sydney-hanukkah-shooting-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/345876\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We do not give in to terror\u2019: Canadians voice support for Sydney Hanukkah shooting victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s been an outpouring of grief and support from Canadians for the Jewish community in Australia, with many saying they\u2019re \u201chorrified\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11577270\/sydney-bondi-beach-terror-attack-jewish-holiday-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">after two men shot and killed 15 people<\/a> and injured 40 others at a Jewish holiday celebration at Sydney\u2019s world-famous <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/bondi-beach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Bondi Beach<\/a> on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765485674_689_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was really horrified,\u201d said Bobbi Zahra, a Jewish woman living in Halifax who said she knows members of Sydney\u2019s community. \u201cI thought, \u2018It\u2019s Hanukkah. We can\u2019t even have a Hanukkah celebration?\u2019 I mean, Hanukkah itself back in the day was a political thing, it was about keeping off marauders, but Hanukkah today is a celebration of light, it\u2019s a celebration of hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Mark Carney echoed Zahra\u2019s comments about the horror of the incident, and said on X that Canadians stand with Jewish people \u201ceverywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada stands with the people of Australia and Jewish people everywhere in sorrow, and determination never to bow to terrorism, violence, hatred and intimidation,\u201d Carney wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The violence erupted at the end of a hot summer day when thousands had flocked to the beach, including hundreds gathered for the Chanukah by the Sea event celebrating the start of the eight-day Hanukkah festival.<\/p>\n<p>Police said emergency services were called to Bondi about 6:45 p.m. local time, responding to reports of shots being fired. Video filmed by onlookers showed people in bathing suits running from the water as shots rang out. Separate footage showed two men in black shirts with rifles firing from a footbridge leading to the beach as sirens wailed and people cried out in the background.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>One dramatic clip broadcast on Australian television showed a man appearing to tackle and disarm one of the gunmen, before pointing the man\u2019s weapon at him, then setting the gun on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>New South Wales Premier Chris Minns called the unidentified man a \u201cgenuine hero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police say 13 people died at the scene and 42 people, including four children, were taken to Sydney-area hospitals. Police added that one of the gunmen was known to the security services, but there had been no specific threat.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>At least 40 people were confirmed injured, including two police officers.<\/p>\n<p>Officials declared the incident a terrorist attack.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t&#8216;We do not give in to terror,&#8217; rabbi says\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Despite the attack, some are speaking out in defiance, with some rabbis in the Greater Toronto Area saying they plan to proceed with their own Hanukkah celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is chilling to realize that this was meant to be the first public menorah lighting in the world this Chanuka \u2013 an attempt to spread fear everywhere, to make Jews think twice about gathering, singing, or shining openly,\u201d said rabbis Avraham E Plotkin and Meir Gitlin of the Tamim Academy of York Region in a statement. \u201cAnd that is precisely why tonight\u2019s Chanuka Menora lighting and Garden of Lights program and concert matters more than ever. Here\u2019s where you\u2019ll see it\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gansburg confirmed to Global News that the rabbi has ties to Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian police agencies said on Sunday they are providing more resources to ensure safety.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement posted on X, Toronto police said they were closely monitoring the events in Australia and \u201cany activity that may target Jewish people,\u201d and would continue to protect its communities.<\/p>\n<p>Police Chief Myron Demkiw said in response to world events, the service would increase its presence in public spaces, places of worship and schools and that during the holiday season, residents would see more officers present.<\/p>\n<p>Vancouver police also said they are taking \u201cproactive steps\u201d to ensure the safety of the community during Hanukkah, including additional officers on patrol and present at \u201ckey locations and events\u201d within the Jewish community.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Antisemitic attacks have roiled Australia, the home to about 117,000 Jews, according to official figures.<\/p>\n<p>Incidents including assaults, vandalism, threats and intimidation, surged more than three-fold in the country during the year after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and the subsequent conflict that erupted in the months that followed, according to the government\u2019s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism Jillian Segal.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, synagogues and cars were torched, businesses and homes graffitied and Jews attacked in the cities of Sydney and Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>Canada is no stranger to such attacks either, with antisemitic incidents <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11168325\/antisemitism-canada-courts-convictions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">spiking across the country<\/a> after the Oct. 7 attack.<\/p>\n<p>According to Statistics Canada, incidents of hate crimes against the Jewish community jumped to 900 in 2023 from 527 the previous year.
