Mr. Gehry was famous for designing buildings that curved and twisted in ways that seemed impossible. His buildings have had a big effect on how people think about architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Gehry was born in Toronto, Canada, and later moved to Los Angeles, California. He first began to make a name for himself by redesigning his own home. He used common building materials in unusual ways. He didn\u2019t want to be held back by the rules that generally limit how buildings are made and what they look like.<\/p>\n<p>The shapes in his buildings often looked like they shouldn\u2019t be able to stand up. But they did. Mr. Gehry thought of his buildings almost like sculptures. He made models out of clay. But Mr. Gehry figured out ways to build unusual buildings that weren\u2019t too expensive.<\/p>\n<p>One huge success for Mr. Gehry was the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. When it opened in 1997, its unusual shape and shiny metal appearance became famous quickly. His buildings are popular with people around the world, and commonly bring in lots of visitors. Many other architects have been strongly influenced by his designs. He became so famous that some people described him as a \u201cstarchitect\u201d (\u201cstar\u201d + \u201carchitect\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>But not everyone liked his designs. Some people thought Mr. Gehry\u2019s creations were too strange. Others claimed he designed his buildings just to get attention. But Mr. Gehry said he became an architect \u201cto make the world a better place.\u201d He criticized architects who didn\u2019t put care and effort into their work, and designed \u201cjust\u2026buildings\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Gehry continued to work until the end of his life. Even at 96 years old, he was still working on several projects.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Gehry wanted his buildings to be exciting, and to make people feel like they were seeing something new and different. He certainly succeeded.
