\n\tEXCLUSIVE: Surf\u2019s up! Point Break<\/a>, one of the most iconic films of the 1990s, is getting the TV treatment.<\/p>\n

\n\tAMC<\/a> is developing a small-screen series based on the 1991 film that starred Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Lori Petty and Gary Busey.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe series comes from David Kalstein<\/a>, who recently worked on Amazon\u2019s Butterfly; Alcon\u00a0Television Group; and AMC Studios.<\/p>\n

\n\tDeadline understands that the network won the project in a highly competitive situation.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe original movie, which was directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by W. Peter Iliff, starred Reeves as rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah, who infiltrates the Ex-Presidents, a gang of Southern California surfers who rob banks. The Ex-Presidents, who wear masks of Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Lyndon B. Johnson and Lyndon Johnson, are led by Swayze\u2019s Bodhi, and Utah gets swept up in their daredevil lifestyle before a massive action chase and a reunion amid lethal waves.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe series is set 35 years after the events of the original film and is focused on a dangerous heist crew with ties to the Ex-Presidents gang.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tKalstein\u00a0will write. He exec produces alongside Alcon\u00a0co-founders and co-CEO\u2019s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson and president of television Ben Roberts.<\/p>\n

\n\tKalstein\u00a0was a co-exec producer on Amazon\u2019s Butterfly, which starred Daniel Dae Kim. He also co-exec produced series including CBS\u2019 NCIS: Los Angeles, ABC\u2019s Quantico and USA Network\u2019s Treadstone, co-showrunning the latter. He also developed series including Jade City at Peacock and Quantum Spy at NBC. He\u2019s repped at CAA, 42 and Yorn\/Levine.<\/p>\n

\n\tPoint Break landed a remake in 2015 from director Ericson Core that starred Edgar Ramirez, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Delroy Lindo and Ray Winstone. It was produced by Alcon\u2019s Kosove and Johnson.<\/p>\n

\n\tAMC has recently had success with another series with a \u201890s film; Anne Rice\u2019s Interview with the Vampire. The series is set to air its third season next year and Mayfair Witches, which is also based in Rice\u2019s Immortal Universe, has also been renewed for a third season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"EXCLUSIVE: Surf\u2019s up!
