Pierre Gasly<\/a> has opened up about the sense of relief he felt when he was demoted from Red Bull to Toro Rosso in 2019.<\/p>\n

The Frenchman, currently driving for Alpine<\/a>, entered his rookie Formula 1 season with Toro Rosso (now Racing Bulls<\/a>) in 2018 after joining the Red Bull Junior Team in 2014.<\/p>\n

After completing his rookie season, finishing 15th place in the drivers’ standings and 25 points ahead of his team-mate at the time, Brendon Hartley<\/a>, Gasly secured a contract with Red Bull for 2019.<\/p>\n

But, as with many of Max Verstappen’s team-mates in recent years, Gasly found himself demoted back to Toro Rosso and replaced by Alex Albon<\/a> ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix.<\/p>\n

The 29-year-old driver discussed his move from Red Bull to Toro Rosso during an interview with F1.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I’m not going to lie, it was sad,” he said. “2019, my second year in Formula 1 \u2013 there was no support from anywhere, in a very big team which is very much supporting Max [Verstappen] \u2013 for good reasons, because he’s put on the results.<\/p>\n

“But I’m starting with a fresh engineer coming from Formula E who didn’t have experience in F1. So it was a strange dynamic. I wasn’t really given the tools to really perform. I tried to fight my own way because I wanted, and at the end of the day I’m there to perform. They were not happy, but I’m not happy too because I could see I couldn’t show my potential.<\/p>\n

“It almost felt like a relief.”<\/p>\n

Describing how it felt to return to the track for his first race back with Toro Rosso, he added: “It’s not a nice energy. I’m there to do my thing and try and give my best but it’s a lot of negativity. I go through that. I just want to drive.”<\/p>\n
