A Disney+ app has launched for Meta Quest<\/a> headsets, joining Amazon Prime Video among the limited selection of native movie streaming apps on Horizon OS. <\/p>\n

Meta Quest headsets were already able to stream Disney+ content through the browser app, but the dedicated app unlocks a few features for a more complete experience. <\/p>\n

First up, the Disney+ Meta Quest app supports 4K resolution streaming and HDR, with \u201cover 100 titles\u201d offering that maxed-out quality level. <\/p>\n

Shows can also be downloaded to the headset, handy for travel use, and there\u2019s even an ability you wouldn\u2019t get with a high-end TV. IMAX content can be watched in its original aspect ratio. <\/p>\n

IMAX<\/a> content comes in 1.90:1 and the extra-tall 1.43:1, requiring some serious black bars, should you try to display such video streams on a normal TV. <\/p>\n

The Disney+ app only supports the Meta Quest 3, Quest 3S and Quest 2<\/a>, with no mention of the Quest Pro<\/a> on the app store listing. That headset could potentially provide the best movie-watching experience, as its mini LED panels use local dimming to deliver better contrast than the cheaper models. <\/p>\n

Meta Quest Disney+ App\u2019s Missing Feature<\/p>\n

One feature is missing, though: 3D. A Disney+ app for Apple Vision Pro<\/a> was released in 2024, and does support 3D. But you don\u2019t get that in this initial version of the Meta Quest app. <\/p>\n

There is some suggestion the app is still a work-in-progress, though. It is currently only available to U.S. Meta Quest users, with \u201cinternational availability coming soon\u201d according to the Meta blog<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The app represents a mostly practical, not-too-ambitious, take on what a streaming service should look like in a headset. It presents the usual tiled view of movie and TV show thumbnails, with no elaborate 3D rendered environments involved. <\/p>\n

Disney\u2019s Meta Quest app represents the opposite approach to that of Netflix<\/a>. It once had a Netflix app for Quest headsets, and first released its VR app back in 2016 for Samsung Gear VR and Google Daydream. <\/p>\n

That app showed Netflix streams amid a cosy 3D environment. But it only supported 480p resolution streams, was not updated for years and was removed from the Horizon store completely in 2024, in favour of streaming through the headset\u2019s own browser. <\/p>\n

The Meta Quest Disney+ app requires an active Disney+ subscription, which currently costs $18.99 a month.
