{"id":351260,"date":"2025-12-17T14:44:14","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T14:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/351260\/"},"modified":"2025-12-17T14:44:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T14:44:14","slug":"lower-clothing-prices-help-inflation-fall-by-more-than-expected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/351260\/","title":{"rendered":"Lower clothing prices help inflation fall by more than expected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Sheils McNameeBusiness reporter<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765808228_517_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/b1cd4ed0-db34-11f0-9016-6de5b06bea92.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"eager\" alt=\"Getty Images A woman with long brown hair picks up items of clothing of the rack\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Lower clothing prices in November helped to ease the UK inflation rate<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Falls in food, alcohol, and clothing prices last month helped drive inflation to its lowest level in eight months in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The inflation rate fell to 3.2% from 3.6%, a larger fall than analysts expected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Lower food prices were the main driver of the fall, &#8220;with decreases seen particularly for cakes, biscuits, and breakfast cereals&#8221;, according to Office for National Statistics (ONS) chief economist Grant Fitzner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">It comes ahead of the Bank of England&#8217;s decision on interest rates on Thursday, with a cut widely expected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The fall in inflation will foster hope that inflation has peaked, with this possibly paving the way for further interest rate cuts next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Other items which also pushed down inflation were the cost of tobacco, restaurant meals and hotel stays, furniture, and transport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Prices are still rising on average across the economy, but there were decreases in some items between October and November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Food prices, which were the biggest driver of the lower inflation figure, fell month on month &#8211; bucking a trend for normally rising at this time of the year.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Between October and November, food prices fell by 0.2 of a percentage point, and increased 4.2% in the year to November &#8211; a decrease on the 4.9% in the year to October. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Chancellor Rachel Reeves said she knew that families across Britain &#8220;will welcome this fall in inflation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Getting bills down is my top priority. That is why I froze rail fares and prescription fees and cut \u00a3150 off average energy bills at the Budget this year,&#8221; she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Inflation in the UK is a measure of the Consumer Prices Index, which is a basket of goods and services selected by the ONS that includes things like bread, fruit, and different items of clothing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The fall in inflation triggered a sell off in the pound, with it falling 0.7% against the dollar. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765808228_517_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/3a5c8ff0-db1b-11f0-b67b-690eb873de1b.png.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A line chart titled 'UK inflation falls to 3.2% in November', showing the UK Consumer Prices Index annual inflation rate, from January 2020 to November 2025.
