Greater Sudbury\u2019s science centre is getting a major makeover, and the federal government is helping in a big way.<\/p>\n

Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe announced Tuesday that FedNor is investing $650,000 to support Woven by Water, a project that will renew more than 20 per cent of the third floor at Science North.<\/p>\n

The total cost of the project is expected to be about $1.9 million.<\/p>\n
Woven by Water will modernize and connect the third and fourth floors with a multi-level play structure and a series of exhibits that explore the intricate and vital relationships between water cycles, with a focus on Indigenous learning.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis support from FedNor enables us to imagine a new future for our third floor \u2014 one that reflects the importance of water in shaping our environment, our cultures and our communities,\u201d Ashley Larose, CEO of Science North, said in a release.<\/p>\n

This priority project also supports Canada\u2019s commitments to Truth and Reconciliation by promoting Indigenous learning through the concept of two-eyed seeing, which embraces multiple perspectives.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis investment will support the continued evolution of Science North, Northern Ontario\u2019s premier tourism destination,\u201d Lapointe added. \u201cThe Woven by Water initiative represents a renewal of experiences, cultural elements and exhibits designed to attract visitors from across the region. Opened in June 1984, Science North celebrated 40 years last year. It is the second-largest science centre in Canada, only ranking behind the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto.<\/p>\n
Once the renovations are complete, Science North will have the first indoor multi-level, full-body play-based structure, catering to all developmental stages and learning styles. The new space will be inclusive and accessible, celebrating Canada\u2019s cultural heritage and supporting learning activities that align with Ontario\u2019s elementary and secondary curricula.<\/p>\n
The federal investments are expected to help boost tourism to Greater Sudbury by creating a more dynamic, interactive atmosphere at Science North.<\/p>\n
\u201cScience has the power to inspire, and Woven by Water will help Science North do just that. By modernizing Northern Ontario\u2019s most popular tourist attraction, FedNor is supporting tourism, encouraging extended stays and inspiring return visits,\u201d said Patty Hajdu, minister of jobs and families and the minister responsible for FedNor.<\/p>\n
