With\u00a0The Stone Roses<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Primal Scream<\/a> legend Gary \u201cMani\u201d Mounfield set to be laid to rest later this month, authorities have shared the bassist\u2019s cause of death.<\/p>\n

The bassist and Manchester music icon\u00a0died last month\u00a0<\/a>(November 20). He was aged 63.<\/p>\n

The announcement was shared online by his brother Greg, who told fans the news with \u201cthe heaviest of hearts\u201d, and\u00a0tributes quickly came in<\/a>\u00a0from the likes of Stone Roses frontman\u00a0Ian Brown<\/a>, Primal Scream bandmate Simone Butler,\u00a0Happy Mondays<\/a>\u2019\u00a0Shaun Ryder<\/a>,\u00a0Liam Gallagher<\/a>, and many more.<\/p>\n

Now, it\u2019s been confirmed by his family that the musician died peacefully in his sleep of \u201crespiratory issues\u201d linked to the long-standing lung condition emphysema, per Manchester Evening News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mani was reportedly not taken to hospital, with his death being declared at the scene. Police are not believed to have attended the address, with a Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesperson confirming that his death was \u201cnon-suspicious\u201d.<\/p>\n

Last week,\u00a0Mani\u2019s brother Greg revealed that the artist will be laid to rest later this month with a funeral taking place at Manchester Cathedral<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A service will be taking place at Manchester Cathedral on Victoria Street on Monday December 22, beginning at 11.30am. After this, a \u201cprivate committal service\u201d will be held for family and close friends.<\/p>\n

Greg also told fans that Mani died \u201cpeacefully at his home in Heaton Moor\u201d in Greater Manchester. He then went on to describe him as a \u201cbeloved husband to the late Imelda [and] the much loved father to George, Gene and Joe\u201d, as well as \u201ca loved son-in-law, nephew, cousin and good friend to many.\u201d<\/p>\n

In\u00a0a tribute to Mani,\u00a0NME\u00a0described how the late musician \u201cheld a rare place in the world of bass heroes\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and \u201cdefined a scene with some of the most infectious and hypnotic basslines ever recorded.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth weighty and melodic, Mani\u2019s bewitching basslines became the bedrock and, often, the driving force of The Roses\u2019 breakthrough tracks \u2018Elephant Stone\u2019, \u2018Made Of Stone\u2019 and \u2018She Bangs The Drums\u2019, and underpinned the band\u2019s low-slung funk development on \u2018Fools Gold\u2019 \u2013 arguably a four-minute encapsulation of the entire late-\u201980s dance rock scene,\u201d it read.<\/p>\n

After learning of his passing, both\u00a0Oasis<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Richard Ashcroft<\/a>\u00a0paid respects to Mani during their shows in Brazil, as part of the \u2018Live \u201925\u2019 tour. The latter shared a short cover of The Stone Roses\u2019 \u2018She Bangs The Drums\u2019 and dedicated\u00a0The Verve<\/a>\u00a0fan-favourite\u00a0\u2018Bittersweet Symphony\u2019 to him<\/a>, while Liam and\u00a0Noel Gallagher<\/a>\u00a0honoured him on the classic track\u00a0\u2018Live Forever\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

My Bloody Valentine<\/a>\u00a0also kicked off their first tour in seven years by\u00a0dedicating the gig to the Manchester icon<\/a>, and\u00a0Primal Scream paid tribute to their former bandmate at their Manchester Warehouse Project show<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Fans have been paying respects too,\u00a0resharing past footage of Mani<\/a>\u00a0that perfectly showcased his big personality and tongue-in-cheek charisma.<\/p>\n

More recently, Primal Scream frontman\u00a0Bobby Gillespie<\/a>\u00a0recalled when he and Mani met Joey Ramone<\/a>, describing it as \u201clike a scene from a movie\u201d, and former\u00a0New Order<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Joy Division<\/a>\u00a0bassist\u00a0Peter Hook \u2013 who worked with Mani in Freebass \u2013 described how \u201cfrom a bass-playing point of view, he was the best\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n
