{"id":352145,"date":"2025-12-18T00:01:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T00:01:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/352145\/"},"modified":"2025-12-18T00:01:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T00:01:17","slug":"canada-sees-record-population-drop-driven-by-fewer-temporary-residents-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/352145\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada sees record population drop, driven by fewer temporary residents &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada has reported its largest <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/population\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">population<\/a> drop on record, which is being attributed mainly to a major decline in temporary foreign students and workers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765485674_689_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/251217\/dq251217b-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Statistics Canada said Wednesday<\/a> the national population fell by 76,068 people, or 0.2 per cent, in the third quarter of this year.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said the number of non-permanent residents in Canada decreased by 176,479 over the same period, a nearly six-per cent drop \u2014 the largest since those records began in 1971.<\/p>\n<p>That decrease is mostly due to fewer international study permit-holders, Statistics Canada said, pointing to recent federal efforts to cap the number of permits issued per year.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s population now stands at 41,575,585 as of Oct. 1.<\/p>\n<p>A Global News analysis of Statistics Canada data since 1946, when it began tracking population totals, shows just one other instance of a quarterly decrease.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The population fell by 1,232 people between the second and third quarters of 2020 \u2014 a time when the COVID-19 pandemic was still raging.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Canada has seen its population explode from just over 38 million people.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Canada\u2019s population hits 41M, seeing fastest growth in more than 60 years'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/TH_CANADA_POPULATION_VMS.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t0:31<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCanada\u2019s population hits 41M, seeing fastest growth in more than 60 years\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Statistics Canada notes the third quarter of 2023 saw the largest quarterly population jump since 1957, with 418,634 new residents in that three-month period alone \u2014 an increase of one per cent. Last year\u2019s third quarter saw a 231,803-person increase.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765813388_386_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<p>In this most recent quarter, the agency said every province and territory except for Alberta and Nunavut saw population decreases, with Ontario and British Columbia seeing the biggest drops of 0.4 and 0.3 per cent, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario and B.C. are also home to the country\u2019s largest international student populations, Statistics Canada notes, and the decrease in study permit holders nationally was \u201cconcentrated\u201d in those two provinces.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Canada saw 73,682 fewer international study permit holders and 67,616 fewer joint study and work permit holders.
